[Advice needed] Is my RPM readings normal?
« on: September 12, 2011, 02:02:49 PM »
Hi,

My ride (4AT sedan) is currently reaching 5 yrs old with mileage around 18K, servicing is done quite regularly at TC on every interval of 8-9months .  Everything is stock except that I upsized my rim n tyres last Nov.  It was changed from stock 15" to 16" (Rims from Stamford tyres) n tyres is CPC2 205/55/R16.

Qns:

I noticed yesterday when I was on the expressway, when I accelerate to 105-110, my rpm went up to 2.8K and when it hit 120, rpm was around 3.2K.  I'm not sure whether my rpm went up so high before (on 105-110) last time but it does feel abit weird to me , so thought of posting here to gather some feedback.  Thanks

Hi,

My ride is on 205/50/16 Falken 912. 2K RPM when on ~80 kmh. I think yours is a bit too high. Were u going up a slope when you took the readings?

Nope, don't think I'm on a slope.  I was on TPE...direction heading towards Changi.

Single adult - Driver.
Boot - spare tyre n some car washing chemicals.
Backseat - 2 baby car seat.

Don't think it was accelerating as I was not stepping hard on the accelerator.

Battery (dry) was changed about 1yr ago.  Throttle body cleaning n air filter changing - no idea but i do sent in for servicing quite regularly.

Did another test last weekend, cruising on tpe, hit 2.4K rpm on 100.  Compared with a fren whom is driving the same model (except that his tyres n rims r stock - 195/65/R15), he also achieved the same rpm at that speed.  However, this should not be the case as I thought bigger rims means lesser rpm will be achieved on the same speed as compared to another vehicle on a smaller rims size.

Maybe u can take yr air filter out and check if it has warped/ tear/ dirty. If nothing wrong with air filter, thn better send to a workshop to do diagnostic tests. Yr RPM is definitely pretty high.

For Auto gearboxes, CVT and 4 Speeds are very different. From description, usually 4 speeds auto will have higher RPM (for example at 100km/h) as compared to CVT gearbox. Just like the case for my Honda Civic with 5 speeds auto gearbox, hitting at 100km/h will be around 1.9k RPM. Of course, lower RPM at higher speed will result in better fuel efficient and saving. Which is why, many car manufacturers recently come out with 6, 7 or even 8 speeds auto gearboxes in their new car models and of course, their newer models will be more expensive with new techology and equipment.
