Driving non-stop on NSH, any problem?
« on: July 08, 2010, 10:25:28 PM »
Hi, do you guys think our Latio is able to withstands 5 hours non-stop cruising on NSH without any problem (ie. overheat, tires, etc). Is it bad for our ride? Intend to cut short my 'north' traveling journal by having lesser stopover.

i think car nowadays are able to stand long duration of driving la, people in other countries also drive long distance, jus tat we stay in a small country and does not have much chance to do long driving. Think maybe for the 5 hrs, it's good to have a 15mins break in between to wash up and top up petrol. If travel fast on NSH, the car will consume more petrol and yr car might not even be able to make it to travel for 5hrs without topping up.

1)A short 15mins break in between wun take up much time
2)A wash up will freshen yrself up - safety
3)It gives your car a short time to cool down also
4)Nt scare later cant find petrol kiosk if petrol runs low

*Remb to check yr car tyres, brake pads, engine oil level and radiator water level before the trip. And hv msia tow truck number might come in handy(touch wood).

Have a happy trip.

done that many times. Full tank from SG, 5 hours door to door non stop still have ~1/4 tank. Normal speed.

Problem?
The Driver - Can your butt take it? will you fall asleep?

know your tyre condition and your limit.

I had NEVER done that with 0W20 engine oil.

Not an issue at all. Proven drive to Penang with one 20 mins stop over to refuel thats all

Do the checks as what fam recommends. If those are alright and your car is not due for service, should'en be a problem at all

If cruising smoothly, the wind will help cool the car. The engine, tires will be heated to a constant temperature and stays there. What we afraid of is get stuck in jam, (like when going up Genting) for 2 hours. The start stop movement will overheat the engine, break and gear.
Of course, I am assuming your tires are still new.
Last month, I witness a mini lorry's tire gave way. Luckily, I was quite far back. Perhaps, the tires were overdue for change.

Always ensure everything before going up.

If you are not tired, go ahead. But if this is your first time, better rest and take a break before continuing the journey. Unless you are frequent driver there, then ok rah.

0w20 EO for long journey is not recommended at all. Too thin also. =)

Keep ur bonnet cover open dat will allow more cool air to enter & thus engine heat to disperse faster, dats wat we do at drivin ctrs for our trainin cars dat operate at least 15hrs a day...

just pull the level to have a small bonnet gap should be ok when driving very slowly during long jam. I will not do that when I drive at highway speed.

one more thing. During bumper to bumper jam, don't need to turn on your fog light, HID light lah. Saw people doing that  :out:

Hmm, then normal halogen light can open or not? If to save electricity, I think better switch off the aircon during those bumper to bumper jam.  :D

If rain, just go out and get your bonnet closed lor. Since it is bumper to bumper jam, those car behind can wait you de mah  :D

If you open the bonnet like that and on high speed, I 100% sure your windscreen will destroyed. the bonnet might bounce up with the "wind"  :bleh:

Some more, why your worry the rain might go in your engine bay? your grilles got no hole de ar? Your bumper also no holes?

==> make sure you check every aspect of your car before the long journey:

Engine : use good engine oil which does not breaks down during prolong driving, ie 5w-40 will be the best option.  Ensure spark plug is good, ie less then 30,000km.

Cooling system : ensure coolen is not dirty and its full.

Braking system : ensure brake pad is good, brake fluid at max level, rotor not warp and brake host not leaking.

Tires : ensure its still good and sufficient pressure.  Check also the spare tire and have the necessary tools to change tire if situation arises.

Power steering : check and top up power steering fluid if necessary.

Gearbox : check gearbox oil; should be at its max mark.

Windscreen wiper : ensure it has a clean sweep otherwise during heavy downpour, it might hinder your vision.

Sound : listen for weird sound coming out from any of the above... if there is, chances are, something is not right.

When you're stopping over any petrol station, pop the bonnet to let engine cool down... best is keep the engine running.

During driving, make sure you lock the doors.  Always keep a lookout for any suspicious movements around your car.

If possible, try to pace with a few Spore cars...

Thats some of those things I usually do for my trip to Genting.

Have fun!!

Dear All,

My friend got a Astina Mazda.  Forgot to close bonnet tight after checking engine oil/water.
At expressway doing 90km/hr, bonnet flipped up and smashed his windscreen.   I think we should not do this.   If your car is not that new now, just take a break, have a kit kat, good for human and machine.   Take care pls.

That's why I said open it only during super long jam (eg. those >3 hour bumper to bumper CNY jam). Bonnet should be CLOSE at all time WHEN YOU DRIVE at normal speed.
