Sudden High Fuel Consumption - Is it due to spark plugs?
« on: April 02, 2011, 09:16:48 PM »
Dear bros,

I have a problem. My ride used to give me 470km+ and recently, 530km++ for a full tank. It's mileage is around 53k. And for the past 2 weeks, suddenly it drop to 410km+ and now 160km for half a tank!!! Driving is as per normal. Just had my servicing in Feb. Went for wheel alignment today and told the mechanic about the fuel consumption issue. He said it might be due to the spark plugs. However, I have no problems starting my engine. No need to crank. Any bros encountered my situation before? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Check all these

1) tyre pressure
2) tyres years of usage
3) air filter
4) constant servicing
5) throttle body cleaning

Last time i have the issue is due to conditions of air filter.

my rpm seldom above 2k rpm when moving off. air-con most of the time just at level 1. Previously, was ok. But now it's a bit weird. Today, it's 119km and the fuel gauge is showing almost 2 notches to half tank. OMG!!! :(

Do you pump petrol yourself or by the petrol attendant?

I notice there could be a huge difference when different people top up gas to the car. I observed that air trapped in the tank can affect the calculation of fuel consumption. Previously my half tank can pump in 21 litres only but when I pump in slowly, it can actually take in 30 litres! Most pump attendant will stop when they hear the click sound. In actual fact, the tank is not full.

If you want an accurate reading of your milleage, top up petrol yourself.

Might be due to faulty fuel gauge. Mine has a mine of its own, even when its full tank it would show 3/4 tank. :confused1:

Hi bros,

I always fill up the tank myself. Usually it's around 36-37l. And the amount hasn't missed by much.

Our Latio fuel tank latio max 45 litres. You can really drive all the way till almost dry. The light usually comes out and I can only pump around 36 litres and travel about 480km. ;D

the next time you pump, try filling it slowly to prevent air from trapping i.e. half-press the nozzle. I can cover 440km on 30 litres. Full to 3/4 mark is 300km.

I use to get 520km till the light came out when I used to travel from Punggol to Jurong at cruising speed on 16". Now changed job and my mileage only 460km for the same amount of petrol. Think the jams and start stop cause this.
