Short start-stop driving trips as well as prolonged idling are the main causes of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.
A certain amount of carbon accumulation is present in all engines and any excess build up is usually compensated for by detergents in the fuel and also by the heat of combustion that burns away the excess. In addition, carbon deposits on the back of intake valves can also impede air flow & cause a loss of high speed power. It also causes hesitation problems by absorbing fuel spray from injectors.
