What'd you think of Latio's stock wheels and brakes?
« on: August 30, 2012, 02:29:41 AM »
The current 15" in my opinion is a big risk considering Latio's lightweight body and poor braking power. I'm driving Latio sedan premium , all stock and no upgrades(worry insurance will void if i change any stock parts). If you could actually upgrade both wheels and brake set. I reckon it will improve both the ride, grip and stopping ability of Latio.

I had twice experienced poor braking and grip. Brake has poor response and the feel is not to my liking. Others may find it OK but not me. The thin width of the stock tires is also a disadvantage and a big risk. Its has very poor grip even in dry conditions. To tell the truth, the ABS is consider useless in my car. I was involved in an accident and rear ended a van. Did a hard braking and to my horror, the tires did not grip and yes i kissed the van's rear. I drove a Subaru before this and the braking feel was way different and yes Subaru's ABS does really is functional.

What i realized seconds before the hit, the brakes took sometime to respond and the grip of tires were absent. I literally went flying into the rear of the van. I was about a car distance away and was slowing down. Unfortunately the van in front stopped suddenly. This is just my observation but in my Subaru i had a similar incident before but in wet condition at NSH. I was running on 16' tires with ventilated disc rotor. The ABS kicked in and i could actually feel the Subaru judder. Not in the case in Latio though. I guess we have to factor in the weight of LAtio. Subaru was much heavier and contributes to the tires gripping better on the road. Latio somehow does not have that advantage.

I guess i could drive more carefully but when i realized Latio's lightweight body and puny tires and poor braking system, I just have to warn others of the risk and eventually this accident could actually be avoided. My observations maybe wrong but hey, i was behind the wheel and experience of driving different cars from Japanese to continental cars, i was sure that Latio has poor braking and grip. Plus it's lightweight body. To tell the truth, i had four people on board Latio and the tires can still skid under normal braking. That happened along BKE.

So i suggest if you wish to use Latio for a long time, upgrade to 16' wheel set with wider tires and better braking system. Yet again i maybe wrong in this but in my experience, it says Latio stock brake and wheel set is really a risk.

What you guys think of this? I'm open to suggestions and advise.

i am on latio stock brakes and light-weight 15 inch rims.

i do agree that for normal drive, the brakes works fine, but for sudden braking, yup, i did have my fair share of heart-popping moments.

i will say upgrading brakes to bbk or equal seems like overkill, but there is one in commercial folder, 'runstop curve slots' where there was quite good reviews, but perhaps i am more on those seldom speed type so i decided to give it a miss.

Runnin on 16 or 17" wheels wif 205 or 215 profile definetly improves traction control on our latio.
Wat is gd abt Vincent Runstop curve slots is u can use back ur existin brake callipers together wif ur upgraded rotors, nano brake pads & stock hose.
If cost is a concern, can try changin to Hel stainless steel brake hose for a more responsive feel.

I believe that the tyre grip is more important than the braking system. I changed my tyre after using the stock tyre for 500km. Our stock tyre is well-known for comfort quiet but not for performance. Tyre pressure also play an important part in the tyre performance.

Most importantly, is our driving habit. I believe that a lot of accidents could have been avoided if we have a good driving habit, road courtesy and observe traffic rules.

Let's drive carefully :D

latio is a family sedan, not a tiong chia. it can only do what a family sedan does.

I must say Latio stock brakes (i'm driving a latio hatchback) is one of the best among the cars i've driven (used to drive a Corolla and Honda Stream. Stream's stock brakes are darn scary...) . So far for me there's no issues in braking.

Any bro here upgrade Pre-FL front rotor(240mm PCD100) to Brembo disc? Found in eBay 260mm dia 22mm thick with 4holes PCD 100. Do you think can fit? Or any other brand to recommend? Beside Runstop. Thanks
