tyre losing air
« on: April 27, 2008, 11:19:16 PM »
recently, i just change to new set of tyres 185/65 GR80..

then after 3 days, i went to top up my air, shocked to find one of them only read 97 KPa !!! so i top up to 240 kpa, and monitor, then a few days later, same thing..

next day, i went straight to installer, and he manage to find a nail on the tyre.. he took it out, and patch it back with something like a tubing inserting into the hole.. air top up to 240 kpa

after one day, i went to top up air, and found the air about 200 kpa.... is this normal ?? from my exp i dun think air lose out so fast...

and also, is the patching reliable ?

the patch probably wasnt that good. it will tend to lose air as the tyre rolls along.

it actually depends where the puncture is..if its on the sidewall then will need to change tyre as when its rolling, its under tension and will open up again..if its on the track itself, due to compression, should seal itself when you are rolling, so just bring back to the shop and get it checked again and repatched..hope this helps...

If it is side that got the hole, beware. I had that burst before.. :p end up change the tyre (kena scold by dad.. years ago)

Anyway, how to check if my tire had enough air and at the correct psi?

Thanks

This is not normal. If the puncture is on the treaded portion, a proper patch job will make it good as new.
Happened to my last set of tires. Ran ok and held pressures till last weekend when i got poisoned .

For new tires, will have also need to check every week at least for a bout a month because it takes a while for the bead to seat fully into the rims.

Can buy tire pressure gauges from petrol station or autobacs or diy stores. From $4 for cheap mechanical ones to $12 for digital ones to $30+ for pro gauges (with air release).

the free gauge the petrol stn give imho not so good.. very buay zhun. what i normally do is just pump air regularly... maybe 1 or 2 times a month.

for me if the tyre lao hong with a nail quite scary. i won't risk it. usually  i will find somewhere trade in then change a new tyre...

not really..... i think it give somehow an accurate though rough estimate.....

when the gauge read ~30psi..... i go pump & pressure @ Kiosk read ~200kpa
when pump up to 230kpa..... its read slightly over 32psi.

I use to pump fortnightly as well.... but now on N2..... shall do it monthly instead....

Last week, i went to Clementi Ave 2 there to pump air (Esso).

3 tyres i pumped very smoothly.
when i tried to pump for the last tyre (the left side tyre behind), the moment i pump it, the air keep on leaking out. i donno what happen to that.
i tried for 1 to 2min, then manage to pump it back to 230. donno why like that?

all 4 tyres i pump 230. by right, the 2nd row tyres shld pump 210, but i am too lazy to change. so, all 4 = 230.

regards.
sorry, i must agree because i don't know how to disagree. agreeeee only....

That happened because you did not properly insert the head of the pump into your tyre valve.

It happened to me before too.

Then it could be because your tyre valve is 'misaligned'.

No big concern and not life threatening.

happened to me b4.....when they change replace my existing rubber onto another rim, without changing the valve (usually should change whenever a rubber is replaced onto another rim)

did you do something to your affected rim recently? or sent to some workshop?

It happened to me before too.

sometime the reading may show err with beep sound.  means errors.
if ok it will show the reading with number
if show err,  hv to properly insert the head of the pump into your tyre valve and try again

cheers
