Changing from Sedan to Sports
« on: April 30, 2008, 04:06:14 PM »
Hi

i'm currently owning a sedan (Dec 05)... intend to change to the sports version...
still prefer a hatchback car...
not sure how to go about doing it...
does it work like handphones where i can go back to Nissan and trade in the sedan for a sports?
wonder how much i would lose in terms of $...
any bros/sis here able to advise me on this?

Thx in advance!

Got 50 over views but no reply.  Haha.  Not sure if you are genuinely not knowing the answer.  Without sharing how much you paid for your ride or indicating whether is yours a 4AT or CVT premium, nobody can give you an accurate answer. Anyway, just go to a SE, and he/she will answer all your questions.

You should know best how much will you lose, we do not know how many years you loan and how much you loan, so we are unable to advise.

ASSUMING yours is a sedan. A dec 05 sedan should have cost you abt 60 plus k ..
Selling prices of 2nd hand Dec 05 ones, now, range from 40-45k.. So assuming the dealer earns 3-5k for your car. Lowest price you can get for your car now, is maybe 40k ? Or maybe 42k ?
Then just do simple maths. How much a latio sports is selling now - your trade in price = How much you top up.

Buying car is always losing money. It's only about HOW MUCH you wish to loose .

My 0.0002 cents worth.  :devil2:
Modifications are NEVER ending only if your wallet's money is NEVER ending.

One must learn how to control his spending on MODIFICATIONS. (:

BUT, i dun care. So? MODIFICATIONS IS YES FOR ME!

Young boy,
Pls do not mislead people, pls note your assumption is based on fully paid or no loan scenerio.

Dealer will take in base on OMV and COE, with estimate of $2K body value nia. If $42K, I think many Lations will change car more often.  :D

What ! 2.5 year old latio body value only $2K ? Wouldn't it be having a better body value to be exported to some countries ?

My previous 2 year old vios can fetch $11K !

Besides Toyota & Honda, pls do not expect high body value for other makes, you list and breakdown your OMV and COE and I will tell you is your body really did fetch $11K. Selling privately, trade in or sell to dealer?

I sold my Feb/2006 Sports in late Dec2007. Managed to get 45k from a 2nd hand dealer. My COE was abt 13k and OMV 17.5k. So body value definitely quite a bit. Selling cars to 2nd hand dealers is like depend on luck and how deligent you do homework. There are unscrupulous and good ones abound.  Advise to call up as many dealers as possible to get quotes and check sgcarmart for idea on how much ur car can fetch. My colleague got his Sylphy with Latio sedan trade-in at Tampines sales branch (authorised dealer, only one there) and got a better price than me despite only 4AT and sedan! So can try ur luck there.

I got my car for 60.5k and suffer 15.5k in less than 2 yrs. Factoring every cent I put in, it came to 24k - meaning 1k/month just on loans! If possible, keep it for longer period to cut loses. Also, must check with financial company abt loan status - whethere you need to top-up to redeem your loan now. If your downpayment is less than 20%, chances is you might have to top-up to sell the car. So, do all the necessary homework to ensure you are comfortable to do it. If not, bear for a while longer before changing ride. Hope you have a enjoyable process.

I followed your link to the car at sgcarmart. basically dealer took car in Dec 07...not sold yet? (by agent)hmmmm..wonder of agent is sweating??

my car's age pretty close to yours...been thinking of getting a SUV ..family is bigger & kind of need the space

agreed with the whole hang on to the car as long as possible....you drive depreciation down

temptation & newer models always hard to fight off :devil2:

myself, my excuse is a bigger family....but when i checked my paycheck didn't get much bigger...so i probably stick to my wheels...dunno :confused1:

Ya I did trade in for my vios for the current latio. I couldn't remember the OMV but think was about $11K and COE about $26K. For my 2.2 year old car, plus the $11K body value, total cost I fetch was about $41K.

Maybe you are right, selling privately, trade in or selling to dealer could have different value. You really need to hunt for the best deal. I think TC got a good value compare with other dealers. Moreover my previous car was quite 'lok' with scratches left behind by vandalism, bumper dented, also didn't deduct the value. Probably got a good SE.

Hi Bro, your 2 year old vios fetch $41K.  How much you paid for it?  Looks like the depreciation per year is rather low for vios, right?  Thanks for sharing.

That was about 1.5 years' ago when I trade in for my vios. It was the older model, unlike the later Beta version. So when I got the car in Y2004, it was $64K. It was considered a lower depreciation car as compared with others.

Hi Bro, to me, depreciation at $11.5K per year is not low.  But I suppose got no choice at times.  We also have to see what is the price of the new car and the depreciation of the new car.  If the new car depreciate is low due to the lower cost of the new car, then going forward, it is still worth it.  Just like my previous car, if I drive for 10 years, per year depreciation should be 5K.  But I sell it off earlier and the depreciation was about 8K per year.  However, I like the new car and the price has dropped to a more affordable level.  So, I went ahead.

To me, Latio/sport is good even for a family of 2 adults and 3 kids. If more members, then maybe a bit squeezy, then maybe worthwhile to get a MPV. If to get another 5-seater, definitely will be lousy excuse if it is due to family size as Latio is already huge in space.

But to change to a new ride within 2yrs, the lose is definitely big. My pay has increased by 70% since I got the Latio Sport but I still feel the pain as the lose could be better used elsewhere if I had the foresight of getting a MPV in the first place. But then again if I had foresight, I would be millionair by now.  ;D   Another thing to face is worse FC for MPV. Previously a full tank of 36L can get me 430km. Now a 3/4 tank of 39L can get me only 320km on average as still running-in. So you must be prepared. My travelling pattern is consistent for both rides so quite conclusive.

Hi Bro, you driving a Carens now?  (No offence.)  Heard from my friend that the FC is bad, even after run-in. He said his is quite noisy after a few months only. Hope his is an exception.  All the best to your MPV.

Sure, what you have mentioned is absolutely correct. Depreciation at $11.5K/year is definitely very high. If I drive the car over 10 years period, it depreciates at only $6.4K/year, it is cheaper than say a civic at almost $8K/year.

Depreciation is always very high if you change your ride before the 10 years period. Cos if you change at 5th year, you may not get back any body value, straight go to the scrape yard. Maybe a continental car still have some value.

I guess that I have the same thinking as you, car price drop, COE drop to more affordable price, so just go ahead. Anyway in Singapore, buying car is just like renting a car..... It will never belong to you.

Think $8K is a more reasonable price. May get even higher value if get more quotes from different dealer / exporter. Think latio still got demand in other countries if less than 3.5 year old car.

Lucky you didn't get from Jazz's dealer.

Yah. My new ride is a Caren III. FC now abt 9km/L, should be getting 10km/L after changing to syn oil. I have already got this taken into consideration when I bought the car, so no problem. Car of this weight is about there. The Wish touted to have 13km/L also does not always return good FC as it is dependent on alot of factors. A friend of mine got only less than 11km/L. For me, my mileage is only 20,000km per year, so FC of 10km/L or 12km/L does not really make much difference.  ;D

Noise is still quite low after abt 3months. Hopefully it does not get noisier as your friend experienced.
