Petrol discount
« on: July 09, 2008, 04:52:29 PM »
I went to pump Esso 8000 last night.  Paid with DBS Esso card.  How come there is only one 5% discount shown on the receipt?  I thought with DBS Esso card, it should be 5%+5% discount...Price is $2.36/litre. Is $2.36 before station discount or after?

$2.36 is before discount.

I pump Esso 95 using DSB Esso Master Card too. I get 10% discount on the spot.

Has the rule been changed? Hence only 5%?

Hi Bro, is there a change in brand preference or is the change from Shell to Esso due to the Esso card which gives you another 5% discount?  Reason for asking is that if your preference is Shell, you can get 5% discount with UOB Platinum card.  Since you are eligible for Esso card, you will also be eligible for UOB Platinum card (annual income required is $30K).

I pump Esso because it gives best value in terms of redemption.

ESSO - $1.25 of petrol = 1 point
750 points = $30 petrol voucher = further 3% discount

SHELL - 1 litre ($2.28) = 1 point
400 points= $10 petrol voucher = further 1% discount

:yehyeh: for that reason, all go for Esso and let Shell feel the pinch n let the petrol benefits n price competition war begin! lol  :bleh:

I do have UOB signature card.  It gives 5% rebate in SMART$?  It is not upfront discount i think.  can only redeem for next pump?  because when I pump Shell, there is also only 5% discount on the receipt.  So i assume the 5% is the station discount.

Want to try Esso for a few tanks to see if any differences of FC or performance.   Hope they won't increase price before I pump again!

Still new to cars, so confused about the discount.

I have already done my research and can confirm that Esso gives the best value in terms of 'Smiles' points redemption for petrol.

I used to pump Caltex until they changed the points redemption from $1 petrol = 1 point to $1.25 petrol = 1 point (same as Esso)

For Caltex you need 900 points to redeem for $30 petrol.

Hence I switched to Esso which required only 750 points to redeem for $30 petrol.

In terms of mileage, there is no difference between Caltex, Esso or Shell. SPC gives the worst mileage and the engine sounds harsh and loud.

It is a personal DBS Esso card.  I still cannot figure out why only 5% discount given.  Is it because I first-timer?  coz I only got the Smile card on that day.

Receipt as follows.
29.67 Lit * 2.360
SYN 8000 $70.04

Discount
SYN 8000 - $3.50

Total discount - $3.50
Total Inc. GST $66.54

Hi Bro,

I also holding the UOB Visa Signature card...give the best discount for Shell petrol for 5% rebate at next pump...Well once a month I'll pump Caltex Techron as well to maintain the engine...

Any ideas which credit card gives discount for Caltex?  :confused1:

Citibank Platinum Dividend card gives 5% rebate for all petrol stations... The rebate is credited back to you after every quarter in the form of a cheque

Thanks for the info...been thinking of getting the Dividend card for awhile due to this advantage of quarterly rebate...currently still on UOB as it provides the best returns for Shell users... ;)

Today went to pump Esso again.  I explicitly asked whether DBS Esso card has total 10% discount.  The cashier said yes.  This time the discount is 10% instead of 5% as last time.  I think the previous cashier made a mistake for my 1st pump.

I feel the Esso 8000 gives less mileage as compared with Shell 98.  Now trying Esso 95 to see how.

I now use Citibank Dividend Platinum to pump Esso, as on top of the station 5% discount, I also get an extra 8% rebate (now promotion - usual 5%).

Check your statement carefully. It does state the monthly rebate amount at the end, in a box.
