Please Help On Tyres Direction!!! URGENT!!!
« on: August 07, 2008, 11:24:21 PM »
Hi all bro & sis,

I am currently using Bridgestone Potenza RE001. Today my fren was looking at my tyres and he told me that my tyres were installed wrongly. I knew that RE001 is directional tyre but since it were installed till now, i hv not even looking at the thread direction. Please advice which is the correct direction:

If I am now standing in front of my car and looking to the bonnet direction, should all my tyres be installed as shown on the above photo? The thread (sharp point) should be pointing downwards for all fours tyres, rite? Currently, the passenger side thread is pointing downward but the driver side thread is pointing upward :confused1:. They shouldnt be pointing at the opposite direction, rite?

What is the complication if the tyres direction were installed wrongly as what i hv mention? i am having quite bad fc (will never over 13). is it bcoz of this? oso will it be dangerous? so worry now

Please advice. Thank you very much

Actually, the RE001 is NON-directional. It can be changed among all 4 tire locations during tire rotation..
However, it is asymetric i.e. has inside and outside. In that case, the left and right patterns should be opposite of each other. The outside wall is the one that has a little lip just above the rims that protects the rim. Not sure if it is like my conti though. My previous conti has "outside" marked on the sidewall.

Your tyres are installed correctly.

Best mileage I get is 12.3km/l on stock 185/65R15.

What is your tyre size?

I guess your tyres are 205?

If so, 12+km/l is excellent mileage for such broad tyres.

Near 12km/l for your broad 205 tyres is very good already.

If you want better mileage,I suggest you switch back to stock size. Should be able to achieve at least 13 to 14km/l for you.

hi bro,

me abit blur liao. cant really undestand why it shld be installed in such manner  :confused1:

There are 2 parts to tire installation. Symetrical/Asymtrical and directional/non-directional.

Very high performance tires are usually directional. They are designed to provide optimum grip when it is turning in a particular direction. For these tires, they cannot be interchanged between left and right. They usually have a marking on the sidewall to show the direction of rotation when fitted. In short, the left and right tires are mirror image.

Alot of assymetrical tires are designed for wet performance to displace the water outwards. Like the RE001, the grooves are designed to displace water outwards so when you see from the front, it looks like the grooves are opposite in direction (one up one down).
However, the tire designer has already designed the grooves such that it does not matter if it is pointing up or down. Only that the correct side of the tire needs to point out.

For asymetrical tires, they can be interchanged left and right. However, care must be taken when fitting to the rims to ensure that the "OUTSIDE" sidewall is facing outside. After that, all 4 tires can change location without removing from the rims.

In short, directional tires have left and right tires and they are mirror images. For assymetrical tires, there are no difference between the left and right tires but because of the way they need to be fitted, they will look like opposites between the left and rights.

Actually, it is nice of bridgestone to make the RE001 non-directional. In that case, the tires can be rotated through all 4 positions for best possible wear.
