2nd CVT gearbox replacement
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:01:49 PM »
Not sure if anyone else have had their gearbox changed.

My car is a Year of Mfg 2005 Latio Sport

This year at about 45K- weird noise stared to pague the car, car was having noisy when driving off)

Brought car to one TCM service centre, no action, finally called another TCM branch.(like to keep the branch confidential)

Did test drive, Nissan agreed to noise

Replaced the CVT gearbox (retail is about $13K) they also replaced the air con compressor

When i checked my invoice, they mentioned that this was done under recall campaign

I was very pleased to have gearbox changed

Anyway there was another strange sound plauging my car even before the change of the gearbox when i braked & when car was at a stop when i change from D to Neutral, sound pretty clear

at 56K i was supposed to go for another servicing & decided to have Nissan check out the noise.

Today I am told there is a gearbox issue again...& have to change

I am pretty worried...my car warranty will end in Feb next year, if this gearbox is so terrible what can i do if out of warranty it breaks down again

My car also lost power since last engine oil change..infact before my servicing the car was already really low powered...

i was wondering if it was engine oil but usually i undertsand if about 2000km over service date car should not be so problematic...

anyway SE is saying they not sure why car is underpowered & have to press accelarator so hard...suspect gearbox related

today i changed new engine oil & am waiting for new gearbox change again...

am very worried

I do not RAM the car & take care of it pretty well...i mean i have been servcing late at times but this should not impact the gearbox

any bros experiencing gearbox issues too

Understand there was a recall from the gearbox for those facing issues...wonder if anyone else here seeing issues too.

will check my serial number if my 2005 CVT need to change.... so far no problem.

Excellent link bro...man not even sure if mine was in the serial number affected...what i cannot understand is that after less than 20K of new gearbox, they are seeking to change the gearbox again...pretty disappointing.

I also confirmed with a Ex-mechanic that Latio indeed have CVT recall, & compresser change..also there is a steering bolt recall or something

The mechanic now works for Comfort Delfro...had the fortune or misfortune of talking to him at past midnight in Ikea carpark after my battery died one evening...

Yes it takes a while for Comfort to arrive...batt change is pretty reasonable...about $130 plus..cannot remeber..warranty for 1.5 years after that on the Amron batt

My Car is definitely not in the "public" recall but TCM changed it all the same....I think they do recognise that the CVT gearbox had had some issues...mine is a YOM 2005.

I imagine the labor & part itself if close to 13-14K, I dun think Tan Cheong or Nissan will simply approve changing gearbox so simply....it takes one day of work too

Anyway, all you folks out there may want to check on noise , my first gearbox change happened when a noise started to appear when driving off ..i kept pursuing it.

I am thinking to try to get them to extend the warranty on the gearbox at least seeing how 2 changes in less than 6 months is scary & does speak volumes of quality of product...recon or new.

will keep you guys posted

streeing bolt change huh... you ring a bell bro. lately I hear some "beep" sound from the steering about once a day. I am not sure if it is due to my electronic clock or the carbon monoxide sensor so I just plug off them yesterday and still monitor the car. If problem remain then I can ask TCM to check if I need to replace the bolt.

Sigh... My car went through the same change. It was involved in the recall exercise by TCM/Nissan and part of the CVT was replaced. However, the CVT noise getting worse and worse after the recall and I sent it back to TCM. The Toa Payoh TC was unable to diagnose the probelm and had to revert to Bukit Timah one. In the end, the CVT gearbox was replaced for free on my ride and they extended the warranty of my CVT gearbox for another year.

Just for the benefit of the rest of us, can you guys describe the noise in detail? That way, we can be on the alert, in case we encounter the same issue... Thanks!

For mine, my CVT ended up sounding like a Manual transmission... Very loud, even with the stock HU at volume 12...

First issue sound was weird. I wish i recorded it but did not.

Sounded like some amount of resistance coming from the engine when car starting to move.

quiet obvious but i lived with it for about 2K km. so not that loud

Second sound actually comes when braking. Sounds a bit like a chugging dynamo. When car at a full stop & i change the car from D to N noise is more obvious

I suggest you turn you air con & radio off. Listen to the car when starting to move

FYI, my car was not under the recall serial numbers but all the same now going for second CVT replacement.

I am pretty low in confidence with CVT now...am begining to believe alto good for Japan ...may not be great for Singapore

Notice KAH motor no loger bringing in CVT Jazz...before they had plenty of recalls & also customer complaints

They are planning a new vehicle Freed which PIs are already importing, Kah Motor will bring in the AT version of the Freed....

I know Nissan n Honda may have diff technology but personally my confidence in CVT is shaken...obviously with the experience

Quote from the article =

Honda expects to sell 4,000 units in the local Japanese market, while local distributor Kah Motor informs us that they are currently working to launch the Honda Freed after June 2009 as a tentative date.

While the Freed developed for, and sold in the Japanese domestic market will be equipped with a continuously variable transmission, our Freeds will come equipped with a 5-speed automatic and the same 1.5L i-VTEC engine as announced in the 2009 Honda Jazz 1.5S. This, in order to suit the driving requirements of the local Honda demographic better.

My gear has been fixed finally

The informed me that the part is now covered by a one year warranty.

I worry about the relibilaty of the CVT now...

Anyway impt if you hear noise, engine pickup is terrible, car feels weird, encourage you if in warranty to get this looked at....

Generally, CVT is more expensive to replace or repair.

I still prefer 4A/T.

Before I got my latio, i had done some searching on cvt cars. Noticed that honda jazz (one of my choices), had the gear box problem which was complained in their forum as well. A few of them changed their gear box once over the 3rd year warrently period. For some who did not, had to change some of the gear parts, can't remember what. Some 'luckier' ones only change the cvt oil every 3 monthly.

When I came into latio forum, I did some search on the problem but at that time, no one share their problem yet. But that's enough for me to have confidence in cvt.

So my final decision is to get the 4A/T, cheaper and not as sluggish pickup. Wish you guys all the best.

Thanks for the info. When you say "chugging dynamo", do you mean:

a) a sound like rubbing a sheet of paper on a table top or
b) rumbling noises?
c) a sound like steam escaping from a pressure cooker?
d) none of the above?

Is it accompanied by vibrations? Yes, I wonder if CVT gearboxes are that fragile? Even Murano 3.5L engines use a CVT. And the new Honda Odyssey will use a CVT. Those have to transfer even more torque. Maybe the Forum moderator can start a sticky thread on this issue and we can keep it updated. Perhaps anyone who has had problems can write:

(1) YOM
(2) Fault
(3) Repairs required
(4) Mileage
(5) Driving style: fast n furious/taxi/normal/gentleman/tortoise , stop-n-go/highway
(6) Remarks: First owner/second owner, super-on maintenance/once-a-year/smoke-come-out-then-go workshop...

Looking at the number of Fits/Jazzes on the road, the number of Forum complaints may actually be only a rather small percentage of the entire population.

Sorry for the late reply.

1st CVT sound was like a dynamo...something winding up tightly when accelerating & decelerating...especially noisy acceleration.
Like a buzzing sound...sorry man i wish i can describe it better...its just hard to describe but it sure does not feel right.

Those driving will notice the new sound vs the absence of it before.turn down the radio, turn off the air con....my advise. If you have another CVT Latio handy go for it.

My 'vibrations" come when i stop the car, weird sound coming from left hand side of the car when stopping

I actually hear this sound again after 2nd CVT gearbox change today...am hoping to compare with another 60K plus milage Latio.

(1) YOM : 2005
(2) Fault : Poor pick up, noise from engine.
(3) Repairs required: CVT gearbox changed 2 times. 1st at 40K plus. Second at 50K plus
(4) Mileage: today abt 61K
(5) Driving style: fast n furious/taxi/normal/gentleman/tortoise , stop-n-go/highway: I have 2 baby seats in the car ...& am mindful of the CVT & higher price paid for petrol when Ram accelerator...so i am a gentleman /tortoise :-)
(6) Remarks: First owner always service at TCM

Looking at the number of Fits/Jazzes on the road, the number of Forum complaints may actually be only a rather small percentage of the entire population.
>> I am gonna be honest...lost of people dun frequent forums still. Many people have diff threshols too, i know my fren aunt/uncle Latio was bloody noise when he sat in my car he mentioned that.."wah you care is well maintained...not as noisy as my aunt/uncles" so many Latios out there could be in same postion...something faulty but just bear with it.

I know the fit/jazz CVT issue was very obvious to spot, the car would vibrate & even loss poer going uphill.

I have not experienced vibrations. My power loss is there before 2nd CVT change...now car is better..but like i said my comfort pretty bad for now on this car.
