Tan Chong Motors has switched supplier for the after-market leather seats installed in its new cars. The current supplier, Tuffi MID
http://www.tuffi-imd.com/ had been Tan Chong's partner for a decade.
My source told me that due to cost reasons, they were out bidded.
Tuffi uses leather from Australia or Europe. The high cost means their competitor(s) who supply China made or Asian country made leather have a lower raw material cost to cover, and hence are able to offer a lower price.
I asked my source why they did not want to provide cheaper leather. They replied that they did not want to be faced with customers who come back to them with leather faults during the warranty period and damage their branding in the long run.
New Nissan buyers may wish to take note of the quality and source of the leather for your leather seats.
If you have to pay for them, the price quoted by Tan Chong should be much cheaper, but you should question about the quality and thickness of the leather, where it comes from and if it comes with a 12 months warranty.
