Bro, which page of the manual says if change to 195 60 the FC will increase and will not be so comfortable? Can share?

Simple common sense.  ;)

Broader tyre = More contact with road, leading to more drag, hence higher fuel consumption.



Height of tyre wall for 185/65R15 = 120.25mm

Height of tyre wall for 195/60R15 = 117mm

Shorter/Lower tyre wall means there is less absorption of impact from tyre side wall, hence technically speaking, the 195 tyre will be less comfortable.

Not really, I am using 195/60R15 and did not notice any typres bulging out of the rims.

Yo bro,

since u r on 195/60/r15, would like you to share if there is odometer error? So which size is the best fit, 195/55/r15 or 195/60/r15 for Latio's stock rims?

he is saying that the manual says that latio on 185/65/R15 will have a very comfortable ride and good fc... obviously he never heard people who change from 185/65/R15 to 205/50/R16 with better fc....

and better grip and better braking too! keke

anyway, idone2u is not wrong in sharing his finding, he is just stating what is in the textbook and what the tanchong guys told him. There is no perfect tire, just THE tire for you, depending on your driving style and preference la. Because to me, its all subjective, especially when it comes to comfort, aesthetics etc.

if  AT gear ratio was optimized for 185 65R15, how about CVT? optimised for any size :confused1: :confused1:

to add on another question, wont that mean after the tires get worn down (less thread depth), does that also mean the settings will run?  :confused1:

One thing I'm sticking to 185, is 185 cuts thru water puddle better than wider tyre. i.e. less tendency for aquaplaning.

it also strongly depends on the thread pattern, and compound used for the tire. Put a 185mm lousy in the wet tire, versus a 215mm good in the wet tire and you will definitely experience the difference.

Sorry bro, can't advice you on that, as I  had changed all 4 tyres immediately after getting my 2nd hand latio, the ex owner had 4 different brands on 4 wheels  :scared:.

Personally, I feel 195/60/r15 is more comfy but again its my perference.

It's interesting to see that F1 tyres don't look very "low profile" at all. Look at the big chunk of rubber on the comparatively tiny rims...

I understand what you're are saying. But am talking about the same model.. Like why didn't I go for 195 on the K415, but instead went for 185 for the K415.. Aquaplaning is better for the narrow tyre.

Having wide tyre is dangerous in a wet situation especially high speed thru a puddle of water when your car is light, and our latio is consider light. Prefer to match heavier car with  wider profile in such situation.

Like to share what I saw today. a car owner want to pump Nitrogen gas to his tyre. Without any support tool, the mechanic release the air of one tyre till the rim almost touch the ground. I look at the tyre side wall flex till so jia lat :nonod: then he pump the tyre up and repeat the cycle again  :scared:  you never know the side wall on that spot will have some crack and when it will fail when you drive on highway. :pray:

Should be fine. Tyre  sidewall is not that fragile. Rubber should still be supple if it is relatively new.

I think you are getting it all wrong....

The tyre shops will want you to upsize cos they can charged more... and hence they will tell you all the reasons to do that... reasons that you have just quoted above.

Look into your car manual - if up sizing is recommended ?
Latio manual did not indicate... the people that know BEST are not the one that sell the tyres but the ones that make the car... so refer to your manual...


btw... I only share my experience - everyone have their own way of doing up the car (or down the car as the case maybe).
I believe in the one that make the car - their specs.... and I would not want to deviate from it.... that's all


Please note that the people that make the car is nissan and not tan chong. Tan Chong is only a local distributor of nissan.. So u should ask nissan and not people from Tan chong... So please get the FACTS right...

What is the Hankook tyre model that you changed to? Which shop?

$75 is an excellent deal!



185 85 R15 at Hurry Tyre at Serene center Bt Timah road.
The agenet for Hankook got no stock and insist that 195 60 R15 can fit, lucky I checked the manual and the engineers at TC to verify,......

Call up Hurry Tyre and ask them if they have stock for the 185/65/R15 Hankook Optimo K415 and they say that they only have 2 sets of hankook tyres but both set sell already so no more of that size. they dun have any other size for hankook tyres too.. I also did a check with local distributor where they got supply tyre to hurry tyre and their reply is NO. So i can safely save that your "New" tyres are not from local distributor and should be from Hyundai Avante cos even if hurry tyres were to parrallel import the tyres in the wun be just bringing in 2 sets... Please check the country where your tyres are made in and let us know....

The manual will not say that if u change the consumption will increase.

I verified this with engineers at Nissan, common science, and  common sense, and google results.... summarised below


ALL other factors are equal - threads, softness of tyres, driving habits etc.....

If the tyre is now 195 instead of the recommended 185, than there will be more contact with the road (hence wat people say more grip). More contact with the road means that there will be more friction. Science 101 will tell you that this will means that the car will need to do more work to overcome the friction, more work done by the engine, more power more fuel. (of course too small a tyre will loose grip - so optimum is given by the maker of the car - who knows best)

If the tyre is now 60 instead of 65, then the car will be lower, cos there is less "air" in the tyre between the car and the road. This will mean that the bump in the road, you can feel it "better".
and hence more bumpy ride.

If the tyre size is different from the specifications, than one turn on your axle in the engine will means more than 1 turn or less than 1 turn in the wheel and hence the distance traveled. What this means is that the odometer readings will not be accurate. Over the long run - a few 10K of km, the differences will become large enough.

I also physically checked a few Latio and found that if they put in a different profile, their tyres stick out of the rims - like going to burst like that... not sure if this is a good sign or not.

Also, as I understand it, the gear ratio etc for the car is designed for the tyre profile specified by Nissan. A different profile would surely cause some strains... what exactly I am not sure at this point.

If we want better grip, we can go for the same tyre profile, but choose the type of tyre/ rubber for wet conditions, which is usually the softer tyres if I am not wrong.

One thing to note - in racing like F1 etc, they wanted to have wider tyres for more tractions, better stability etc but they also change tyres very frequently, and the tyres uses a different type of rubber compositions than the normal ones that we use and they use Nitrogen too. The pattern in the tyres are also different for different race conditions and the softness, hardness of tyres are also factors.

One conclusion I get out of this exercise, there are a lot of science to tyres. I do not want to follow the tyre shop guy blindly (they did not explain to me the drawbacks of a different profile, only say better grip and a lot of people change and no problem! ).

I would rather play safe and follow the instruction from the people that makes the car, who would have optimized and created a balance between tyre profile and other factors FOR our normal diriving - and not race driving....

Just my 2 cents worth

- not meant to shoot anyone down or any tyre shops or any tyres down
- just sharing my experience and research....

Hope I'm not too late with my two cents. I watched a program on "SPIKE" where they were replacing the wheels and tires. The wheels were bigger and wider (15x6 to 17x8). The tires wider and lower profile. They also put bigger brakes on this car, after testing. The tire and wheel weight was close to stock. The final analysis was; slower acceleration (by fractions of a second) because the "centrifugal weight" of the wheel tire combo was moved farther from the center of the wheel. This was also true for the stopping distance (increased) until the bigger brakes were installed. I might not have all the specs. correct but the general idea I'm trying to get across is, IMO, it will look better but perform worse, except maybe cornering will be better.

Yes I know. I was the one that notify Hankook about this.
The tyres were from Korea. I saw one made in China when they are installing... so I did told them.
Try Comfort delgro at bradell... they should have a set there with 185 65 15

your engineer at nissan is from tan chong or the engineer from japan? So to u those who upsize their rims and tyres to wider size all dun have common sense right? Thanks for that comment abt common sense and abt those tyre shop that u say the "CON" people into upsizing...

To me the word "CON" is very uncalled for. Its up to individual to believe what the shop people say and not like that "CON" u into something inferior....

I hope Hurry Tyre did not sell those "take off" tyres that Avante owners traded in, as brand new ones.

if not where do they get their tyres from? not from Sin Hong Hwa (local distributor for hankook tyres) then from where???

I used the word CON because they were not honest enough to tell you all - They tell u can use a different profile tyres and they have done a lot before and they were no complaints, and that it is "OK". BUT they never tell you the set backs and draw backs if you were to use a different profile. Hence CON.
However, they did not lie and tell untruth.... just did not tell you the whole truth - just part truth. I felt CON. (It is a feeling word.... )

Sorry brother, My english not very good - like AH SENG in subaru and cannot accentuate well ... so I will end up suntan in Sydney. ;D... instead.

Tan Cheong engineers and Nissan engineers... to me they are professional enough to tell me the whole truth... they did say " Can change to a different tyre profile, but there are compromises, fuel consumption, ride etc, vs grip etc. If you want to change the tyre profile, please go ahead" I have informed you

This way, I as a consumer knows both side, and not just "no problem, I have changed a lot of Latio, can one lah... dun;t worry".

With this.... I wish to end this discussion from me. I will not respond further as I felt that in my sharing of my experiences and the researched I have, my words (CON, engineers from Nissan vs Tan Cheong, common sense etc) have been taken out of context , and missed the MAIN picture and the MAIN point.

There will always be people out there that insists on bigger tyre profile is better and they have done their own research and asking. There are also a lot of people out there that may not know the differences and the possible drawbacks- I just want to highlight the case ....
... so that we are AWARE....  ;D

It is the same sharing that people will say rolla is better than Latio, or Cont cars are better than Jap cars... and so on and so forth... lah...

Please.... all in good faith (unless you are a tyre dealer...)
