Car won't start
« on: August 10, 2009, 09:56:26 PM »
Guys,

My Latio refuse to start up.
Battery is fully charged up, tried cranking 5 times and still not able to start it up. FYI, car had just been serviced at AS last Friday, upon collection, there is no problem with it. But on Sat morning, when I cranked it up, it judder a little before starting up.

But this morning was totally impossible to start up. Since today is a public holiday and most workshop is closed, I had no choice but to leave it till tomorrow morning.

Is it due to the fuel pump or the injector?

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and connect back to reset the ECU, sometime it works.

I suggest you send your car to Tan Chong to check if it is under warranty, but I am unsure if your warranty will be void since you have switched to CNG.

Had a similar problem before too, thought it was the battery, but turned out to be injectors. Since you can start on CNG but not on petrol, I would say its fuel injectors.

Thank you all for your replies. I am now at Tan Chong getting the problem fix.
First diagnostic by the service advisor is that its due to my CNG system, I told him that I could start on CNG but not on petrol but he still insist that its the CNG system problem.
No way is he going to check on the fuel pump nor the injectors if I dont remove the CNG system.

No choice but to start on CNG and go back to my installer to uninstall the system. Since the car cannot start on petrol, I got to tow it to Tan Chong at Lok Yang.

Never knew that Tan Chong is so rigid on such issues. :(

since AS had just service your car, why not ask them to fix the problem?  If TCM service liao car cant start we can go back and ask them to fix it FOC, so maybe AS also FOC leh.

CNG is an after mkt option, so it is natural that Tan Chong is sticky about this.

By the way, is Latio on CNG really much more economical to justify the CNG installation cost?

Did call up AS but they mentioned that they do not perform repair on the fuel pump, which is my problem.

Finally after a day of running about (730am till 445pm), they found  the problem.
The damm fuel pump choke and cannot be repair, so got to replace one. Total cost, $410 for fuel pump, $120 labour+ $45 towing charges. :(

Next another bill for the uninstalling and re-installing of my CNG system. :(
The only plus point after today exercise, is that I finally ground the rest of the 3 points of the ignition coil to the VS, now there are 4 points grounding. ;)

About 16 mths ago, I installed the CNG system as mine was already on the verge of out of warranty. So far, based on my monthly mileage of 2000+km, I am paying about $120 for CNG and $20 of petrol for warm up and occassional run on petrol.

Looks like it was the CNG that choked the fuel injection. I heard that many taxi drivers driving the PI CNG cabs face the same maintaineance issue and they simply gave up on CNG.

that's good saving.

I am not that sure if the savings is worth it.... considering how much one needs to fork out to install CNG.

No, no. CNG do not operate together with petrol injectors. They have their own sequential injectors, once CNG is operational, the petrol injectors shut.
Most taxi drivers are complaining about the queuing time, but today a 44 pump station at Toh Tuck is opened.

I just called up AS Defu to injuire. I told them that my Latio cannot start due fuel pump problem. They said that if my warranty is over, they can order the fuel pump from TC and do for me. So you should have gone to AS (or any outside workshop) actually to get the fuel pump done. You could buy the fuel pump from TC yourself and bring there. I don't think they will ask you to uninstall the CNG. You could have saved so much and didn't even need to tow your car. (Fuel pump very easy to change nia. My old mechanic took less than 30 mins to change the fuel pump of my ex Toyota Corona. Well, don't know about Latio though). And by the way, me also averages 2,000km per month. My monthly fuel expenses is around $120. Not on CNG though, but Malaysian Mobil 97.

I see... I was mistaken then. Thanks for highlighting.

Yeah, if you have the time, then its ok to order from TC and get it changed. But I could not wait as I need the car for today. I could do it with my regular mechanic but again time is a factor. So if your fuel pump is down, how can you drive to AS and get it replaced?

AS(at Ubi) also mentioned that I need to remove my CNG system as the CNG is fed through the manifold and the connectors to the fuel injectors are being bypass by the connectors for the CNG injectors.

The fuel pump for Latio is located under the back passenger seat and after the replacement, the entire car smell of petrol. If you dont mind the jam at the custom or you are there for weekend shopping, then pumping MY petrol is ok.

How do you pump fuel in M'sia? Tamper the fuel guage before going across the causeway?

A lot of my friends who frequent M'sia have told me that so long as your fuel needle is above 1/2, the officers close an eye.

One of them genuinely forgot to top up petrol and his tank was near empty.

He highlighted to the Officer and said he is willing to turn back if he is refused entry to M'sia due to insufficient fuel in his tank, but the kind Officer let him pass.
