Title: Article on CVT (Post relevent CVT information here!)
Post by: hopeless2212 on October 27, 2006, 05:16:36 PM
Hi bro and sis.. found this article on cvt..

CVT Benefits and Test Drives
Continuously variable transmissions are becoming more popular for good reason. They boast several advantages that make them appealing both to drivers and to environmentalists. The table below describes some of the key features and benefits of CVTs.
                                                              Advantages of CVTs
Feature : Constant, stepless acceleration from a complete stop to cruising speed
Benefit : Eliminates "shift shock" -- makes for a smoother ride

Feature : Works to keep the car in its optimum power range regardless of how fast the car is traveling
Benefit : Improved fuel efficiency

Feature : Responds better to changing conditions, such as changes in throttle and speed
Benefit : Eliminates gear hunting as a car decelerates, especially going up a hill

Feature : Less power loss in a CVT than a typical automatic transmission
Benefit : Better acceleration

Feature : Better control of a gasoline engine's speed range
Benefit : Better control over emissions

Feature : Can incorporate automated versions of mechanical clutches
Benefit : Replace inefficient fluid torque converters

Cars with CVTs have been common in Europe for years. But it's taken a while for the technology to gain a foothold in the United States. The first production automobile to offer a CVT in the United States was the Subaru Justy.

Sold between 1989 and 1993, the Justy never attracted the attention of American drivers. So what's different about newer CVT-based cars -- cars like the Saturn Vue, the Audi A4 and A6, the Nissan Murano and the Honda Insight? The best way to answer that question is to take one of these cars for a "test drive." The animation below, which compares the acceleration of a car with a CVT to one without, gives you a good feel for the experience.

(sorry.. cannot download pics) :(

When you step on the gas pedal of a car with a continuously variable transmission, you notice the difference immediately. The engine revs up toward the rpms at which it produces the most power, and then it stays there. But the car doesn't react immediately. Then, a moment later, the transmission kicks in, accelerating the car slowly, steadily and without any shifts. In theory, a car with a CVT should reach 60 mph (100 km/hr) 25-percent faster than the same car with the same engine and a manual transmission [ref]. That's because the CVT converts every point on the engine's operating curve to a corresponding point on its own operating curve.

If you look at the power output curve for the car without a CVT, you can see this to be true. Notice that the tachometer in this situation shows the engine revving up and down with each gear change, which is recorded as a spike in the power output curve (and which the driver feels as a jolt).

CVTs are equally efficient on hills. There is no "gear hunting," because the CVT cycles steplessly down to a gear ratio appropriate for the driving conditions. A conventional automatic transmission shifts back and forth trying to find the right gear, which is far less efficient.

With all of their advantages, CVTs do have some shortcomings. In the United States, they are still trying to overcome an image problem. The Subaru Justy, for example, was known as a gutless micro-car. Traditionally, belt-drive CVTs were limited in the amount of torque they could handle and were larger and heavier than their automatic and manual counterparts. Technological advances have put CVTs in the realm of their competition -- the Nissan Murano's CVT can handle its 3.5-liter, 245-horsepower V6 engine -- but first impressions are hard to overcome.

hmm. Somehow I don't really feel it's true, dunno about you guys, but cvt seems to feel abit sluggish to me compared to 4at. Cvt stock response vs 4at stock response seems different. also, it feels pretty weak to me on a hill. maybe it's really just me..

Hi,
Maybe its due to perception, could it be you feel like that cause when on the CVT, the engine revs are constant where a 4AT would be rising and that would translate to the perception that its going faster? When I'm driving on beach rd and taking the ECP, there's a steep hill to get on the ECP and with the CVT its really able to reach the top faster although it sounds like the car is dragging but the Speedo is rising as i'm driving up . Not trying to argue bro, just wanted to share my tots as I too initially tot my car is dragging along but then realised... hey... I'm passing alot of cars...  ;D

I have drove AT before ... my bro older car and the current Nissan CVT + older Lancer CVT. Personally, I feel the effect faster AT pickup is due to the gear change (due to AT using planetary gearing) The effect of sudden dropped of speed and sudden pickup of the speed makes one think that it is faster. But if you observe the meter properly, it does mean it pick up the speed faster.

As for CVT, in Lancer implementation, there is a rubber band feeling, i.e. step on accelerator pad and it takes a while to translate into the actual pickup thus the sluggish. Nissan Implementation is slightly better in term of that and minimizing the rubber band effect. As for the rubber band effect, I do wonder if it is the doing of the ECU?

For me, the CVT pickup is good and the speedo in fact rising up pretty fast except you dont feel the surge feel of the ATs.

Unless you do a test - stock at vs cvt. Else you wouldnt know which is better.

Moreover... the design of the CVT suppose to be longer lasting than a AT type.

Hi bro,
no worries, i'm not the least bit offended. but Cvt really does feel this way. I do go that same road often, as my office is in golden mile complex, however, i've never driven 4at on that slope so I really can't compare.

Not too sure about CVT, I must agree it feels like stretching a rubber band. I guess if we are impatient to stretch it fast, it will breakdown faster!! Hahaha ...
Anyway, think CVT will be good if the power of the engine is high and thus it will pick up faster.
I still prefer the feel of the 4AT than the CVT - my preference.

Depending on the construction of the CVT. Newer generation of CVT are using steel belt and more advance technique/technology to make it more robust.

This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTX_iYW5x10 is powerful.

I just got my Latio Premium CVT ride last Saturday.
When I press on the accelerator, I can feel the "power" to accelerate...
I am not sure abt 4AT coz i don't have a 4AT to compare...

I am still unsure how to handle my ride yet...
It's easy to hit 2500rmp when i start to drive the car. After that I try to maintain the rpm at 2k and 80km/h.

Hi Bros & sis there, help needed on when to change the CVT transmission fluid? Not sure as just got my latio premium recently, my old manual car required to change transmission fluid after every 40,000KM drive. Thanks :confused1:

Autotransmission or CVT fluid is scheduled to be changed every 40,000km, but an earlier fluid change does no harm and is beneficial.

Why not every 10,000 change since not expensive? That would be even better right? gear more smoother and will convince urself ur gearbox will last longer mar right? than normal sythethic engine oil change u also wont want to change at 10k right? 5k would be a good time also engine more smooth less chance for sludge to built up in ur engine? still got a long list like brake oil, engine coolant tyres, brake pad etc......it is good to half the recommended time or milege by the manufacturer so u can feel good u had done everything u can to keep ur car smoother :zipped:

i dont think there will be any harm to our CVT GB if we change the transmission fluid frequently other then burnt wallet. The cvt fluid must be NS-2 from Nissan, no after market type to be use. CVT NS-2 fluid is quite costly, about 90 - 110 per 4 litre. Please correct me if i'm wrong ...

is it true that we can only get it from nissan TC?
no after market? or other shops selling the original nissan cvt transmission fluid ?
& how much do we need? 4litre? or more?

the cvt dip stick is some where btw the battery and the coolant cap... check fluid level  when engine is running... for my last cvt.. i change the cvt oil first time at 38k... then gearbox start to slip before it hit 70k, i change cvt oil again... then near 100k, gearbox is really bad... sold off immediately... tat was a mit cvt...

If you are refering to other garage selling NS-2 Nissan CVT oil is possible cos many places carries this oil. not too sure about the color. but typical changed should be either every 40k or 60k .. cannot rem. Auto change de ... cannot wait turn black as if the CVT oil turn black .. there is already no protection so the gear box will wear out faster.

Battery dead is rather common as default using wet but most of us dont rem top up of the battery water. Like me .. the last one also dies very fast cause I got many incident below the recommend level. Now in maintenance-free type. so much better I think.

maintenance free.. urs is wat brand.. last how long le... ppl say varta AGM type can last 2 times longer.. could be safer right.. any comments.. cheers..

just tug it upwards is it...
no need to turn or twist or watever isit...
seems really very difficult...

Hi spyder_696, just managed to pull out the dip stick few day ago...Need to use small screw driver (or you may use any small metal/hard object) to press the middle square hole and pull up the stick (i believed we hv diificulty to pull out due to the cover is too tight due to never open b4)...By the way, my colour it look it yellowish (after wipe it on tissue paper) and not sure should i change now (ard 49kkm liao, 3yrs+ 3 mths liao)...from the link attached, the new CVT fluid= Red, Bad = Black, Yellowish (mine) => ???? :confused1: Anyone can help to advise.

yup, u r right, need to push the little hole on the left if u r facing the steering wheel... yup, u r oso right the color is not reddish like mit cvt atf oil.. yup, it is a little yellowish... but it is time u get urs change... but i not sure TCM recommended interval is what... i think best to change at 50-70% of their recommended internval... cos cvt box is expensive...

TCM will change it at 60km interval. I will wait till ~55k km to do my 60K service package and change the CVT oil.

I also spray WD40 on the CVT module to reduce noise if I feel it is too loud, it works for me.

well I paid S$1019 in mar 08 for TCM 2yrs/40k service package liao. That include CVT oil, brake pad, EO, filters, wiper, spark plug(when needed) and the rest stated in their website.

Each TCM service is 10k apart but I prefer EO change at 7~8k apart. So, I will still do one or two time simple EO change @ outside workshop in between my TCM services. Then do major component/CVT oil change, tyre rotation under TCM at the recommended mileage.

i think 2 yrs max i can only cover 30k... the 10k last service cant be brought over to the 3rd yr right... now my latio 11mth old le... just pass 13k km i think... i oso think i need to change engine oil at 5k interval outside too... hee...

you can do a service when you once drove 10,000 km or 6 month since previous service. Say you drive 30k in 2 years, no problem just send to workshop every 6 month. You get your oil change in time so that you will not drive with old, degraded oil but TCM only change the parts once you hit that mileage regardless your service package. that means they will adjust the timing to change major component base on your usage, but oil change is regular basis

from what i understand, we are to use only Nissan NS-2 CVT oil and not any other brands. Please confirm if otherwise.

If you are refering to other garage selling NS-2 Nissan CVT oil is possible cos many places carries this oil. But if you are refering to CVT oil from other makes and brands, then I not sure whether can our car GB uses them ... Please check with Experts only and advise back in this thread for others informations ... thk u...

I was checking out CVT b4 buying my Latio and found a web-site from Australia on car maintenance stating that the CVT oil used by different brands are different and they advise the readers to go back to the car manufacturers for oil change. Changing the wrong oil might damage the CVT.

I have also checked with the Sales from Tan Cheong Bt Timah. She feedback that the first oil change should be after 60K Km, then every 30K Km.

yup, all manufacturers uses different grade for their cvt boxes.... and not all car manufacturers make their own cvt boxes... last wkend... nissan sold out all their cvt latio.. and now left with 4A/T... does it means that for nissan, their cvt is better... i really hope so... hee...

Any 2nd opinion on when 2nd CVT oil shd change (at every 30k km will be damn siong lei)? Mine just changed at Autosaver at $90 with normal service package right b4 CNY. Btw, do watch out the CVT oil level after replacement as for me, 4l (1 standard container of NS-2) is not enough whereby believed they have topped up for me another ~1l, FOC . So far it's working fine after the replacement.

Hehe.. yea, travels to KL often, sometime up to Penang. U oso not bad hor, covered ~20K within 6 mths. Since i travel so much, therefore i service all the while at TC, less headache. I don hv to monitor so much on wat nd or hv to change. Normally do 1 service (10K) within 3 mths.

Changing the CVT oil at a certain mileage is a good idea as a guideline but it should also depend on the style of the driver. If you are aggressive on the throttle, then, the CVT gearbox has to work harder and puts more stress on the moving parts especially on the belt. Just like a manual gearbox with the clutch plates, if you are aggressive with hard acceleration, your clutch wears out faster or rather, the steel belt on the CVT box. The main issue of gearboxes is after warranty if you plan to continue driving the same car. Changing the CVT oil sooner can mean extended lifespan for the gearbox after warranty. Which is cheaper, changing the oil or gearbox?

Car manufacturers have basic guidelines but also need to ensure that it is not too expensive to maintain a car. Let me give you an example, BMW's autoboxes are maintenance free, no need to change the oil, but at 150K, you are supposed to change the whole gearbox. Ouch!

lastly do anyone has any idea how much a CVT GB will cost for latio? I heard its ~$3k, also heard its $10k... scary leh.. when i buy this car, i intend to drive till scrap de... if halfway CVT dies on me then i will sian 1/2.  :crying:

i juz did my at autosaver and from the way they do the job, i've decided to stick with them for my subsequent svcing. Autosaver CVT charges 95bucks. If you bring your own CVT oil, they can change it for you during your 10k svcing session. Outside selling 85bucks for NS2.

Guys, dont push till 100k to replace your cvt oil. I checked with TCSC and recommended my replacement at 100k. Recently did 70K service and Mech inspected my GB dip meter, found the oil to be dirty already and level low. On the spot drain out the oil.... visually quite dark!! Follow the 60K replacement, also check your GB dip meter over 10K to be safe.

Anybody know how much cvt oil our latio need? Thinking of buying the CVT NS-2 oil myself and change at outside workshop during 60K servicing.

If more than 4L, how long can we store the leftover cvt oil? Feel like very wasteful if throw away. Very exp.

Also, which nissan stockists do you all normally get your parts? First servicing outside TCM, so had to ask.

Thanks in advance.

I just changed my CVT gear box because mine died... I did not know about the CVT oil change thingy  hecen up to 140K still never change - and my mechanic - the small shop one - never tell me to change.
Then the gear box died on me - got to tow the car.
At TC - they recommend to change the whole gear box at $13K!
At Delgro - they recommend me to overhaul the gear box at $4500.

In the end my rep send me to another workshop at Ubi - they changed my GB to a recon one at $3500.
However, there is a risk - it may or may not be that good.
And true enough - 2 weeks later it died again. It was replaced again with another recon GB. Car in for 1 week. Just got car back last Friday. Now stress testing the car to see if it will break down again...

I learned my lesson lor....

good info,

i did renew my cvt fluid at 60k, but currently my milage still at less than 100k, so keeping my fingers crossed.

am surprised the mechanic never mentioned about changing your cvt fluid, if i am not wrong, normal 4AT also need to replace their ATF at certain interval.

safe driving bro.

I previously servicing with TCM - recently divorce them and service outside cheaper. 4.5yr latio.

Currently my milage just hit 180k and I think their last CVT oil change were at 80k or 100k? My cousin forgot already  - I bought the car from him btw.

Planning to go Autosaver asap for CVT oil change. Beside changing CVT oil at regular interval, any else require? Eg. full servicing or overhauling?

Currently CVT is still working fine but I do know that it ought to be maintain similarly for 4AT - flushing and changing AT oil.

Previously driven the lancer glxi auto CVT and during that time my mechanic advice to change the CVT oil at 30k to 40k interval. So each time i see the oil(if I remember correctly) it's reddish in colour and looks pretty used but still reddish.

Now currently driving latio at 40K mileage I went to change the CVT oil and the colour is totally BLACK. The oil use is NS-2 and the colour is clear greenish. My concern is failure of CVT which may cost more so assume average mileage at 20k per year and change at every 2yrs of $140 is still reasonable and after the oil change I can feel the drive very much smoother.

Car is very expensive so need to take care to drive long long......

CVT oil is 5.5 - 6 litres
Engine oil is 3.1 litres should be enough already.DON"T OVER FILL THE ENGINE OIL.
as for the CVT oil,why not using back the original nissan NS2 fluid.if anything goes wrong ,u need to come out more money for CVT GB
