Title: DIY door lining to reduce wind noise: who's interested?
Post by: corgan on November 30, 2006, 10:06:56 PM
Just to share with all, I have DIYed a second door lining to help reduce the wind noise. As you all would have noticed, once our rides hit 80km/h and above, you can start to hear wind noise coming in.  :out: But with this DIYed door lining, the noise only becomes noticeable at about 100km/h and the volume of it is definitely 30-50% lower than before. Best of all, this DIY lining will not cost more than $15.   :devil2: After doing the lining, I found the door harder to close because of the extra padding but its slowly getting seasoned and getting easier to close now.

here are some pics to show you what i mean.

its a foam-like material. exact material and where to get it i got no idea also. sorry abt that. no special tool needed, just a pair of scissors to cut the lining once u stick it onto the door frame. the lining has dbl sided tape behind it for u to attached. less than 15mins can do up 1 whole car le.  ;)

Hi to all. Few months ago I did ponder the merit of this DIY idea. The insulating material can be purchased from HomeFix easily at $10/tube. There are different diameter type and length, most brown and black. So must do rough measurement of our door circumference to decide on length to get.

But in the end I rejected it because I found out that our original Latio door seals are already of double-insulation type. If you look closely there are 2 circles of the seals around each door. That is why our car has outstanding noise insulation, compare to other cars like Sunny, Lancer, etc. The more you check, the more you will appreciate our Latio quality. My opinion was that adding additional layer will not increase SP by much lah.

And adding the DIY seal will definitely make the door harder to close, which I am not sure is something I want to endure everyday. Not to pour cold water lah, just share my 2cts worth of opinion.

And while at HomeFix, maybe you want to check out a 3M product that look like a spray can costing $15 (?). You just spray its contents to the wheel arches and the foam will harden very quickly, forming a hard resin like material to supposedly increase the noise insulation property at these corners (much like that done at SP shops). My friend told me a can is good enough for more than 2 wheel archs and it feel quite heavy. But personally I feel stock is good enough but those who are interested could try out and give FR lah.

nah. no such thing as pour cold water. You're free to give your views bro. At least I know where my friend gets them.  :D  Homefix?

As for the sound insulation of our latios, I have to admit the quality is a lot better when compared to other cars in the same class but wind noise is a bother to me. Was trying to find a way to reduce the wind noise and happened to chanced upon this DIY lining at another forum. For the price and effort, I believe its a good deal especially if you drive spiritedly and always go fast on expressways.  :devil2: Hence I still stand by my pt that wind noise has been reduced 30-50% overall. Anyway, I'm going to YD today so that other bros and sis there can take a look at it and decide for themselves. Maybe can take them for testdrive also :D

Hi Jon

Way to go bro, I like your ideal of this DIY!

Tonight I need to attend and help out a wake at AMK so might not able to drop by YD. That's why did not put my name in the newbie gathering. :crying:

If I can manage to squeezeeeee some time to drop by at YD, I'll definitely like to check out your door lining.
Cheers!

Hi, bro. I like ur reply.

We need ppl with positive attitude. There is definitely no right or wrong opinion. What I did was only to highlight my reservations. We all appreciate ur effort in taking pictures and sharing ur enthusiasm. It is good that you are letting other ppl try out the improvement. Those who want to try out should take note of the visor factor, and also whether they could accept the increased difficulty in closing the doors.

You can definitely get the insulation tubes at Thomson Plaza Homefix store.  But I suppose other DIY shop could have stock too. Take note there are those tubes with solid core, those without single hollow center, and those with double hollow center, and different thickess and width (much like aluminium window grill). The gap between the 2 insulation seals on our doors are a bit narrow, so must take care when buying. But safest is to get back the same design that you are using right now, as it is already available for 'audition'.

Cheers and enjoy ur DIY.

My friend (driving a honda civic FD, the new one) installed a similar sound proofing strip/door lining on his car. Think if I'm not wrong its from 3M. The material is flat and quite hard. Found it quite hard to close the doors after installation. Damage = $40.

Seen corgan's door lining last evening and its quite different from what my fren had. Its round and soft, similiar to the existing door linings we have on our car. Most important of all, damage is less than half of the 3M one..... Decided to give it a try. IF its not good, can simply just throw it away without much heartache... :bleh: :bleh: :bleh:

Sorry to kp abit. Ur friend civic FD is the cost for 2 doors or all 4 doors?

I believe Corgan cost of $15 only for 2 doors. Correct me if I am wrong. The few designs I saw fr Homefix are from 3M and each about 2m (depend on width and shape) cost about $10. Those small width type should be longer for same cost.  1 tube should be enough for 1 door. And if you got lobang for no brand but really big drums type, should be even cheaper.

I believe if you could get one type that is thin and narrow enough with the appropriate softness, it will be possible to reduce wind noise and yet not increase the difficulty in closing doors. That takes some effort though.

$40 for all 4 doors for my fren's door rubber lining. He said the material from taiwan...

What I understand from Corgan is less than $15 for all 4 doors (Corgan: please correct me if I misinterpret it...). "Thin and narrow enough with the appropriate softness", the door rubber lining on Corgan's car fit exactly your description (in my personal point of view). Its quite easy to close Corgan's door as compared to my fren's FD. My fren's car I have to slam three times then can close....

When I saw the rubber door lining on Corgan's car, i was thinking to myself "Mai Tu Liao!". That's why once I reached home last night I added myself to the list...  ;D

anyway, the interest thread for the lining will be here for another week, will close it after nxt week so that I can get the materials from my friend. So if you're interested just put your name down. Even if after the interest thread closes getting the material should not be a problem if you're interested, just pm me will do i guess.  ;)

hi bros, i got a few concerns, would like to clarify

1) under sun and cool nights, will it cause the material to harden and turn brittle?

2) when want to remove, will the double sided tape cause any damage to the paint? (hopefully not, and i think the sticky remnants can also be removed with thinner or what's the other liquid ah?)

I believe these 2 points can only be told after some time right?

i totally agree with the visor factor. above 90kmh, can hear the "vacuum" wind sounds caused because of the visors.

1) so far had it for 3 weeks, no hardening yet.  :devil2:

2) the double sided tape is the same as normal double sided tape. But so far no issues with it coming loose. Can be removed easily unlike 3M double sided tape. Hence I doubt your paint would be damaged in anyway. ;)

From what I know, rubber have to be stored in air-conditioned and controlled humidity environment. So think most rubber would deteriorate over time no matter what... Think what we can do is buy more of it lo, when the rubber hardens over time, change a new one, just $10 only ma (about the cost of 2 car wash...)....  ;D

Saw Corgan's car. Neatly fitted; so neat that I had to look harder to notice the extra lining. (Probably because of myself not paying attention to the stock condition all the while, or may be because it was night time when I saw it.)  ;)

And I could somehow close the door comfortably.

Like the rest of you guys, my concern is its durablily and also the physical damage. Anyway, from the threads, seem like it shall be fine fitting them on.

Kinda busy with work and abit reluctant to do anything to my car now. Will contact Bro Corgan once I am ready.

Bro Corgan you are indeed the DIY-Man!

Cheers,

KEL.

sticky remnants can also be removed with thinner or what's the other liquid ah?)

Don't worry about the sticky remnants, they can be removed with wd40, will not damage paint, only got to wash before you can add some more double sided tapes when redoing the sound proof.

Sim, that's a good idea! By the way, do you want to add the door lining to your rear door as well?

Actually I was thinking maybe do the front 2 doors first, cos the wind noise mainly comes from the 2 front doors. Maybe do front 2 for a week, then following week then do the 2 rear. Like that then can see the diff of the rubber door lining...

the effect from lining the front 2 doors will be the most felt for sure.  :D since its easy to DIY, I'm sure it wouldnt be a problem. actually a good idea to see the difference the lining can make.  :D

Went to bukit batok autobacs this morning and noticed that they sell this type of rubber door lining also. BUT its $12 per roll and don't think its able to do 4 doors just using one roll... AND the material is not as good as the one Corgan. The one at autobacs is the flat flat broad broad type which I personally felt its not so good...

It's all round. Very easy to stick it. Just need a little knowledge where is the optimum part to stick it for better result.

I've been studying where to stick the lining the last 2 days and was wondering if it would be more effective to stick on the door instead of the body, exactly the stretch that compresses onto the inner rubber lining (the part on the body)

Was thinking for $10.00, might give it a try and see how it goes when compared to the way most of the rides are done.

bro, u aint the first to think abt it.  :D one sunny at the mcf diy meetup. he actually had 2 layers of the lining. one on inner lining of door, and one on the door frame itself. The effect is  :w00t: but the door will definitely be a lot lot harder to close after that.

but anyway bro.if you do try, pls tell us the results k?  ;)

Just DIY it in my MSCP. Got some advice from Corgan that you have to pull the tape while sticking it so it will get firm and not loose/thick.
The main thing of pulling is to ensure of enough/excessive of the tape as while doing my 1st door, I find the remainding tape like 'not long enough' to do the rest so i called corgan and asked for advice.(I redo the 1st door again & had a foot excess  :scared: )

After pulling & sticking onto the door, I had an excessive of 3 feets.
Yes!!! It's darn hard to close the door now. If got passengers, I have to ensure I'm the last to close the door so that the rest can easily close the door 1st. ( And let me do the 'hard' work... :bleh:)

CheeRs!!!
Title: Re: DIY door lining to reduce wind noise: who's interested?

haha. actually there are 2 reasons y need to stretch the material.

1. if you dun stretch it, there will be no tension so the material will not be firm. Also, the material will be thicker so the door will even be harder to close.  :D

2. and to ensure that 1 roll is enough for all 4 doors. (actually most people will end up with about 3 feet left on average.  :D )

bro. just let the material season out for abt 2 weeks. Then it should be a lot easier to close le.

It is still effective and the vacuum feeling is oblivious.  At least I'm happier that the door is getting easier to close that soon as expected.

Hi Corgan,

Thank you for your time this morning. Nice talking to you.

Initially I dun really believe the part about very hard to close the door. Now I fully agree. Did driver door so far, the door now is slightly pertruded out when compared with my passenger door.

Should be ok I suppose, will have to wait on Monday to see the result.

A very obvious improvement for this modz is If you are travelling tunnels like CTE which i did yesterday.. You can really feel no foreign sound from outside & it's a different feeling.

Agree with you vincent. But the 'down' side of this mod is that my ride my feels slower... That's what I felt when I sound proof my 4 doors...

Done mine yesterday, I pasted is along the orginal rubble lining instead of on the car body coz mine is white colour, with black lining is looks abit owful & not so nice :P

All doors are so hard to close even you slammed the door... :D hahaha, must hold the handle to pushed it to close. Overall, when me & wife sat in the car this morning, we felt that we have entered in a vaccum tupperwear, hahaha, was so enclosed like no air is coming in, while driving, really felt the road/wind noise been reduced so much, whole car are much more quieter than before. (i dont have any SP on my doors).

But donno how long can it last..... coz it just double sided tape on it, after server opened & closed doors, car washes, when will it drop off??... must think of a way to secure it firmly...

haha. somewhat knew u would experiment with the rubber part after u asked me can or not.  ;D I'm not quite sure how sticking it on the rubber part will affect the seasoning time, but i suppose just give it 2 weeks or more bah.  ;) As for how long it can last, only you can tell us bro, but i suspect it wont last as long as if it were stuck on the door frame.

Like ur analogy best, "vacuum tupperwear".  :D

Haha, i quoted jef post, want to try to paste it on the body rubber lining, it looks much neater & nicer lor... not on my white body... :P

You are absolutely right. 10 buck worth of tape can only do 4 doors mah, what to do.  :D :D

Anyway, a more detailed description of the closing door effect.

With the tape pasted onto the frame,
Front door - Hard to close, easier now after it becomes seasoned.
Rear door - A little harder to close than before only. Was quite surprise that it wasn't like the front door.

With tape pasted onto the door,
Front door - Much easier to close as compared to the above method. It also looks nicer as the tape is concealed with the original rubber. The vacuum effect is still there, but I dun have the chance to verify if this method is better that the former in terms of sound proofing.
Rear door - Same as front door.

personally, I prefer the second method. Cleaner and better looking. Based on what I see, if you have 10 more bucks to spare, it is possible to do both method on the same door.

Recently noticed that my rear doors when opening got this 'muack muack' sound, sounds like rubbers rubbing against each other sound. Guess its the new door lining rubbing against the original lining. Think its because I did't stick the door lining properly. If the findings from the bros here is that its better to stick on the door itself, then maybe a buy one more roll and do it on the door and take out the one on the frame, $10 and 30min only ma...  :D

Hi Corgan, would you be able to install it for me?

You should start charging them $1 for the installation. Consider that as a token of appreciation or just save up for your future experience. :bleh:

Anyway, my experience is that if you intend to stick it on your door itself, try not to stretch it. The rubber strip is elastic but not the sticking tape behind. Part of my lining came off and I need to patch it up with the leftovers.

I am still waiting to do the wheel arc... when you free? can "experiment" again.  :D

:D Part of the fun from DIY comes from doing it ourselves, thats what I believe.

Think we might be helping ken do his car up in Jan, maybe can do the wheel arc as well, join us then?  :D

Totally agree with Corgan! The feeling is totally different when you DIY the thing by yourself. This simple DIY only took me about 30min (cos I slowly do and TCSS along the way) so no sweat! It feels damn rewarding when everything is completed and you enjoy the end product...  :D

Hey everybody. I was at Autobacs 2 days ago and saw that it is also selling some DIY Soundproofing tapes. I bought a roll of 1cm-width type for about $12.90. It is of 73ft! which is more than 20m long. But the material seems to be of different type as bro Corgan got. After installing in my car, I would say wind sound is reduced when travelling on expressway but road noise  seems to have become more prominent (accetuated by absence of wind sound?).

Any bro/sis who has missed out bro Corgan's MO for the tape can try that if you are not patient enough to wait. The tape is designed for car door soundproofing as put on the product cover. Autobacs is located at Bukit Batok ave 6. It is also having 15% discount on car grooming products now.

Hey Bro, thanks for your FR on the autobacs door lining. Its the hard type of door lining right? Meaning to say its like hard compressed rubber, and not like sponge right? Wind sound is reduced but road noise louder? Doesn't sounds right to me. Maybe you see if it improves over time and update us again ya?

For the one that I'm using (got it from Corgan), both wind noise and road noise are reduced significantly. It gets better after a while and now I'm fully enjoying it cos the rubber season liao, so door closing seems to be back to normal. If the louder road noise persist, think maybe you should try using the door lining from Corgan. Cheaper by $2.90, can eat a plate of carrot cake and one milo liao, haha...  :D

wah. 73ft!  :D thats a lot of lining. Anyway, when u referred to road noise, i take it as the noise coming from the tyres and undercarriage rite? I believe it sounds more prominent because after the wind noise is reduced, the other major source of noise is road noise and hence you are more likely to pay attention to it now than before, just like you said.  :D but unless we SP the floorpan and the wheel arcs, we just have to live with it.

Hi Corgan,

I saw the pics NSman posted.  He seem to put the strip at a different place then you.  He put directly on the rubber lining, whereas you put on the metal part of the body.  I a bit confused, so which one is correct huh??  :confused1:

all are correct.  :D depends on u where u like it. effect shld be roughly the same cos the main purpose is to aid the rubber seal in sealing the doors. ;) His method looks nicer but since ur car is black in colour, i dun think it will make much difference.  :D

Hi corgan, Managed to squeeze out some time to do it today. I hid it between the rubber and the frame, so that it looks like it's part of the rubber. However, I don't know if it's as effective as your method and carmodz. Wanna do a test? give me a call if you wanna check it out.

it should be effective bro. no need to test la.  :D as long you feel an improvement compared to last time, means the lining is doing its job.  give it a go on the HW, thats when the most improvement can be felt.  ;)

hi bro. Not sure whether I'll be getting anymore material for now. Cos getting a bit busy. But if u really need it, can get a few bros to consolidate orders and i'll get it for u guys.

Cant tell u where exactly where to get it as its my friend's lobang. Hope u understand.  ;)

on a side note, i'm testing a new material which is better but also a lot more expensive. Will let u guys know the effect and maybe organise a MO if got enough interest for it. ;)

Hi all bro/sis, pls do be carefully when installing this lining not say tat is not effective. If not install properly water will slip thru the door top frame during those jet wash at petrol station. This happen to my old ride during few times of car wash i see water slip thru both of my rear door. After i remove no more this water slip problem. Guess my diy skill not gd enough tat why pls do be carefully during installing dont want any bro/sis ended like me. My friend from mazda2 club they using another type of material those hard material not the foam insulation type tat i use.

Price for this MO is very attractive  coz i spent more then $20 in this  :crycry:.

you meant the rubber one??

anyway, I've done mine up since the first mo for this and water never seeps thru, tried and tested daily and mine is placed in between original door lining and the door itself. Till now my door needs to be closed harder as it provides an extra layer without deforming much and still with reduced road noise. Maybe someone else can try this method.

thx for sharing ur experience bro. Anything that is not installed properly would have its problems. So my advice has always been to do it well instead of rushing it.  ;)

i tried the hard material too. but found it too expensive and not cost efficient considering its effect.  :(

just a disclaimer: the material i used is in no way related to best_ctz's lining

thx for sharing ur experience bro. Anything that is not installed properly would have its problems. So my advice has always been to do it well instead of rushing it.  ;)

i tried the hard material too. but found it too expensive and not cost efficient considering its effect.  :(
I want to disagree that the hard rubber type is not effective. No offence to anybody huh...

I got mine at autobacs, 21ft of 1cm width at $12. A good test of effectiveness is to check how the last door closes before and after the mod. The last door is always very difficult to close after the mod as if an invisible hand is stopping it. But if the window is wind down by a tiny gap, it will close with ease almost like before. This could be explained by air being trapped in the car and cannot escape when the door close and there is a compression of sort. So, it is not the rubber preventing the door from closing, but the air that is trapped in the cabin. The stock condition will allow air to escape through the gaps between the doors and frame, but not after the rubber lining is done.

Hope all understand my explanaton lah. All said, I think the hard rubber type should hv same effect as the lining promoted by Corgan. Maybe the durability will differ lah.

Cheers.

Everthing aside, i would appreciate if discussions can be kept strictly on my door lining on this thread. Everyone has their own view on the lining. Thanks.

thanks for your explanation in determing the effectiveness of the lining. I'm glad you liked ur hard rubber lining, it must have really worked well considering what u wrote in the earlier part of this thread suggesting the lining wouldnt improve the SP effect much. It just turns out that for me it didnt really worked out that well as i hoped. Regards.

attached a pic of the hard rubber lining i used just for those who are interested. $17 a roll. 4 doors would require about 5-6 rolls.

First of all, I would not have commented if hard-rubber type lining has not been tainted. My FR now is that it works. I am not out to sabo ur lobang or whatever. I also appreciate ur effort in helping fellow lations.

Secondly I objected to ur cost quoting as above. It gave ppl an impression doing for a latio will cost $17x5-6 = $80 to 102.
Far from it. The hard-rubber lining I bought cost me only $12 and is enough to do for more than 2 cars (72fts or 21.6meters). (previously I quoted 21fts. My mistake. It should be 21meters). You might have got an expensive one but it does not mean that all are that expensive. Please go to bukit batok autobacs to confirm this pricing if you are interested.

I hope the mods will not delete this posting as I am just clarifying some mis-conception. I am not expecting this kind of reaction as I am just being helpful.  :zipped:

I'm just wondering, during my postings, have i said anything about your lining or how effective or ineffective it is? Maybe you interpreted my personal experience as a general comment on your hard rubber lining, Having said so, i have edited my previous posting so that people would not get mixed up.

In the first place, I already pointed out in that its was my own personal experience with it and no way did i discourage anyone from using it.  I also quite clearly pointed out in my reply to you, what material i was using and how much it would have cost to do up all four doors. I even posted up a picture of it for reference. so the price i quoted was for THE lining i displayed in the picture, and not other stuff.

I'm definitely open to the idea of trying new stuff to improve our rides, but maybe the next time you try to put your point across, try a bit of tact. I guess thats all i have to say.

to mods: feel free to delete my posts if you feel they are not appropriate. Thanks.

Just tried out on my driver door, by putting the tape on the recommended position. The door can't be closed no matter how hard i slam. I need to slam with my hand on the handle. Material seems a bit too thick.

Now I put in another position, the door can be slammed close without forcing, ie, push the door hard and it will close tight, no need to use hand to follow through.

Have to hear the wind noise tomorrow, whether the way I stick the tape has any effect. Thanks Corgan for your group buy effort.

that jia lat ah  :D but give it a while.. will season out then shld be fine liao... one thing u can try is to close the door with the window down a little. It will help to reduce the force needed to close the door.  ;) cos the air inside can escape easier.
Title: Re: DIY door lining to reduce wind noise: who's interested?
Post by: Alpha78 on May 16, 2007, 08:59:15 AM
Yup. It's not so much of trapped air cannot come out that causes door closing to be difficult. When the door is slammed and the gap is about 10cm, the edge nearer the wheel arch would have been in contact with the tape, and there's a bouncing effect.

Now I'm wondering if I should break the double sided tape and stretch the material to make it thinner. That means I need to buy additional double sided tape to cover the gaps introduced by the stretch.

ic. i i get what u mean now. if the material hasnt set yet. can jus remove it slowly and stretch it again before applying it.

Post by: Alpha78 on May 16, 2007, 10:58:11 PM
Tried stretching just now on the front passenger door. Didn't work well. Broke off a small piece, and the rest I broke the double sided tape. Some more it didn't stick too well.

Took a second look at the driver side door which I did last night, it managed to close easily after parking a full day under the sun at the office. Spots on the tape that were too cramped have moulded into shape. Decided not to redo the driver door after all, and wind noise is still reduced substantially.

For the rear doors, I stuck the tape right beside the inner rubber lining along the door frame, which helps the doors to close without very much increased effort. Hopefully tomorrow after baking the car under the sun, all 4 doors will be moulded correctly.

Thanks again Corgan for dropping by my office.

there is some things you can DIY, some examples would be interior lights and soundproofing which I have tried.

If you can think of more, no harm sharing it on a new thread so we can try it out.

But DIY soundproofing is very dangerous cause no know how to take out scare spoilt the roof.

i did diy sound proofing for my last car, very extensive some more. 4 doors, boot and wheel well, all wheel arcs and floor pan (yes i remove all the seats).

not that difficult, but very tiring and exhaustive. my previous ride is a Mazda 2 SP. few months after i done my SP, i sold off the car for my current latio..... faintz.

the only thing i have not done is the roof, cause it gets noisy only when it rains very heavily. but the chances that its raining very heavily and i am on the road is slim

yes had difficulties this few days closing but i believe everybody who has installed it has the same problem initially as the lining hasnt been compressed to its final state yet.. should take about 2-3weeks..
