Hi all, I was advised by the SE to pump RON95 petrol. But I read the manual, it says can pump minimum RON91.
So the question is:
1. Can I pump RON 92 without engine knocking?
2. Have anyone try RON 92?
3. What possible consequences from pumping RON 92?
Man thanks for any replies

HI DR
As long as the fuel is Unleaded, i think shld be np to pump for our Latio.
-
I guarantee you that it is 101% safe to pump 92RON for your Latio.
If there's engine knocking, you should send it back to Tan Chong to rectify. This should not occur as Latio is designed to accept 91RON petrol onwards.
The possible "consequences" from pumping RON 92 is that you save more money as compared to pumping 95RON. ;)

but using 92, the response become so sluggish that i think i tends to step on it more. tat was with my last ride. i think it still depends on individual as to whether will really save money lei...
-
lol... Nissan cars are engined to take Ron 91 fuels and above though all the SAs at TC will recommend Ron 95. I've been on Ron 92 since day 1 of my Latio and my current car so no worries :D

Was advised by TCM not to pump RON92. So far, tried RON95 of Caltex, Shell and Esso, all work fine for me. RON98 more smooth; FC a bit better. V-power felt the difference in power but exp man.

BTW, i feel pening when i see the "Panda"'s kungfu here..... errrr

Hi iagree,
Actually pump 98 is more than enough for Latio unless you really got extra cash to burn. 95 is good to go.
I see the Panda I feel giddy spinning around. What is pening BTW ?

Hi Jazz, sound like silly for me to pump SPC98 for so long, :glare:, i think it's abt time for me to change to 95 liao altough the petrol price has came down (maybe from Mobil this time)..pening = giddy (in malay word)
-
finish your SPC 98 then pump about $20 of SPC 95. Try it first before you pump in full tank. I only pump SPC 95 once and that's it.
ok, this is only in Malaysia. when you pump petrol. see if you can detect a trace of karosin in the air or from the pump. If yes, black list that station and pump else where. What you see may not be what you get.

Hi Jazz
Good one, i always pump the 'cheapest' one when i drive to Caltex... I thk their cheapest one is 95?
Ya, agree with u, burn more cash if we pump > 95.
Ya, very giddy..
Pening is giddy. Hokkien said HIN/Tao Hin/Tao Kong after seeing it spinning like that.

Hello LatioR,
Nope, I dun find you silly, you cared for your car. :D

You also Malaysian ?

Hello iagree,
Yep, Caltex "lowest" grade is Caltex Silver which is equivalent to 95.
-
Hm.mm.m.....I tot pumping lower grade of petrol means there are more impurities in the petrol which in term means tat ur engine will be dirty faster??:confused1: :confused1:
-
the grade is with reference to RON (Research Octane Number)
lower grade does not mean more impurities, just lower RON
-
You also smell kerosense ? Heng ah not only me nia.
Better to avoid Malaysia petrol especially those near the boder as there has been many reports of the petrol being mixed with Kerosene.

I have heard about this "hear-say" from petrol attendants too, but the fuel filter in your car will prevent any impurities from flowing through to your fuel injector.
How about those in USA who pump 87RON petrol?
-
Did TCM explain why Latio not advisable to pump 92RON?
I thought since owner manual states min 91RON, should be no problem to pump 92RON.
I didn't ask. Am going for servicing this Wed at Bukit Timah. Will check with them.
Just curious, any guys here have pumped RON92 before?
-

Me pumped 92 from SPC when petrol price went thru the roof earlier this year.. been used abt 4 tanks before switching to caltex for more discount.. no issues lah.. just that 92 pick up slower..step oil car take it's own sweet time to pick up.
-
Jazz just said whether pump 92, 95 or 98RON got no difference.

Hi Arias,
so serious? can confirm?

No worry, eversince I switch from riding motobikes to cars, no more filling up in JB liao. No offense to Malaysian, although cheaper but just feel uncomfortable.

Hi Jazz, thanks for thr advise. For me, normal coffee sb more than enough for me (for sure not from starbuck). Will try 95 then. When u mentioned u also Malaysian, u can't simply a Malaysian as u seem like not really well verse in malay lei..me, yes (been working in Singapore for > 12yrs, home town Penang)
Hi all there, any station from JB or 2nd links been bad listed by u, do share with all lei..Only heard my friend complain > 11 yrs ago when he has to push this 400cc Honda blade due to petrol with mixture of wafer/kerosene (he suspect)..

the panda really make me tao kongkong!
I got the car in September, tried 3 tanks of M'sia V-power near border, all 3 tanks gave me 10.2km/L, 10.5km/L, 10.7km/L, not sure why also. Perhaps the petrol really kena mixed :crying:
then I tried SPC 95 for next 3 tanks, my FC becomes 12.1km/L, 12.7km/L 13.2/L. My driving style always the same, no hard revving or wild overtaking.
If RON92 really wun spoilt the engine, then might as well save the $. A penny save is a penny earned...
-
Hello iagree,

Caltex Silver = 95RON
Caltex Gold = 98RON
Caltex Platinum (Equivalent to Shell V Power) = 98RON
Hope this clarifies.

Hi DarthRevan
I cannot pump other fuel, coz i got 15% discnt from Caltex (corporate Starcard). No choice to compare.
What i can compare is SG Caltex (cheapest fuel, Silver?) vs Msia ESSO F1.
After i chg my tyres to GR80, i thk my FC hit abt 10km/L or slightly lower than 10km/L, very SIONG!
Regards.
-
hmm check with u all>> OCBC credit card can use at which petrol stations, other than Caltex??
i use caltex silver so far for these 5 mths.. cos it is near my hse and along my work area.

OCBC discount is only applicable to Caltex

maybe should try it for yourself .. maybe as what Jazz say.. it's a mindset thing... but if my wife sitting as a passanger can comment.. there might be something there.. i donno.. but i'll definately use 92 again should the petrol bill shoot thru the roof. ::)
-
Yeah, 92 is enough. The reason pumping higher RON petrol will give you better FC may be because of the additives inside that clean your engine. So when you pump Vpower, you only pay extra for the additives. Vpower is basically RON 98.
IMHO, 92 is enough, then occasionally when wallet gets a bit fat, can pump Vpower to pamper our car. ;D
-
Hello iagree,
No worry, as long it petrol and able to drive the car. ;)
Cannot anyhow pump petrol. ::)
Must also ensure that the petrol pumped meets the car manufacturer's min RON requirement.
Eg. Toyota Vios minimum RON is 95.
Luckily Latio min RON is 91, so can pump 92RON.
-
This is my last reply to backup my response previously stating all RON rating does not contribute to FC or performance or spoil your engine. Attached is the link for your reading pleasure and knowledge, especially to the smart alec who quoted me.

"...all RON rating does not contribute to FC or performance or spoil your engine."
With reference to the above statement, sometimes one needs to take published articles with a pinch of salt, as publications, whether on line or on paper, are all profit driven and they have their bottom line to take care of. Some articles are also "Sponsored" and are actually paid articles.
While it may be possible to feed your car a lower RON petrol than the recommended RON, doing this on a long term basis may ruin and damage your engine.
If "all RON rating does spoil your engine," does that mean Ferrari owners can safely using 92RON for their engines on a long term basis without causing any damages to the engine in the long run? Ferrrai owner manual states a minimum RON of 98 for their engines.
With regards to "...all RON rating does not contribute to FC (fuel consumption) or performance," perhaps forumers may wish to share their personal experiences?
I know that 92RON is definitely safe to use for Latio.
However, I have read about some forumers complaining that 92RON petrol is lacking in power.
Many have also been advised by Tan Chong Motors to pump at least 95RON for their Latio even though the Latio owner manual states a minimum RON of 91 for Latio.
-

Yeah, iagree :)
As long as is Unleaded can already. You see our Latio, it is printed there near the oil tank cover, it says "Unleaded" , means? Go... unleaded can already, dun pump leaded fuel else car KO.

For Latio, you can safely pump any grade of petrol sold in Singapore, 92, 95 or 98RON. ;D
But if you own certain cars which have a higher RON rating, you must pump at least 95RON, eg. G9 Toyota Corolla 1.5 has min 95RON rating, but the 1.6 version has min 92RON requirement.

no offense clarence, just to clarify...previously i'm driving a Vios, the minimum RON is also 92. I pump 92 for 3+ years also no problem

My uncle pumps 92RON ESSO for his Cefiro 230JM V6. When not started for days, (about 2 or 3 days) the engine will experience minor knocking within the first few strokes.... all oil and fluid levels were within the acceptable range... think u guys might want to take note.
SG's petrol has more sulphur in it than japan's one and perhaps... PERHAPS more impurities as compared to the Japan rating.. so if the rating in our manual says 91.... it would be safer to 'plus plus' to 95; since the manual is based on the japan high-quality fuel. 95 is the best.... value for $$$ and good mileage, though i've been starting to pump ESSO 98 since the petrol price went down over the last month. Cheers!

Care to elaborate what are you trying to say in the above highlited in purple ? Don't anyhow copy from web and publish without even know what you want to lay your message.
Again, pls go and read and find out more, what spoil engine are you referring about ? Do you know that engine knocking is very minimal for today cars ?
For those who can afford Ferraris, do you think they will bother to read the manual and pump RON92. :out:
There are articles and I just showed one, you choose not to believe and again ask silly question for forumers experience, you are doubting facts against feeling ? ::)

Hi DarthRevan,
I had a friend who owns a Proton Wira and the min RON is 97.
He tried pumping 95RON and experienced engine knocking.
Try reading up at Vios forum.
Several Vios owners (model before current latest model) experienced engine knocking when they pumped 92RON and the Service Advisor advised them to pump 95RON.
Toyota Vios 1NZFE engine requires min 95RON.

Alex, ::)
To keep the story short, if you have no knowledge of the publishing business, there are times when advertisers pay publications like motoring magazines to write good reviews about their products.
For example, a distributor of a "fuel saving" product may arrange for a motoring magazine's Reviewer's car to be fitted with their "Wonderful" fuel saving device for free.
Of course, the Reviewer, in return, would write an amazing and convicing review of the product, even if it's just another white elephant. And probably just quoting a very minor 'Not-So-Good' aspect of the product, to disguise it from being called a "Paid Review or Advertisement."

You really are making a fool out of yourself replying unrelated issue to the title indicated. We have been discussing if different RON able to use and now you are deviated again for fuel saving product ? :out:
You are constantly giving wrong info and misleading car owners on your own belief without any backup proof and facts.
Lastly is a legal issue if you copied articles without quoting them to use on your own essay. If you have no calibre to write profound sentence, pls quote the originator. And pls do not become a PCW and worst still a non-knowleagable one. I just wonder how old are you behind the monitor screen as a phantom forum surfer maintaining your ego in senseless explanation.

I just got my Latio ride in early Oct and about to hit 1K. I have just started to use RON92 for the last tank and have not encountered any knocking problem. Did not notice any significant differences between 92 and 95. My previous car was VIOS and have been driving with RON92 since day 1. No problem whateverso except that VIOS fuel consumption was far more impressive than Latio. I was getting 14.5k/l for the manual VIOS. I think the auto should be around 13.5k/l but I am only getting 12.8k/l for my Latio.
-
To the best of my knowledge, Vios shares the same 1.5l 1NZ-FE engine as the Japan assembled 2000 model, 9th generation Toyota Corolla, and min RON requirement is 95.
What min RON requirement did your Vios owner's manual state?
Or did you retard your Vio's timing to allow it to accept lower RON petrol?
-
this is to reply base on my own experienced...my previous car was H.City 2004 IDSI which only req. RON 91 (stated in the manual) n i pumped the Caltex RON 92 since the very first day i got my car..I have tried RON 97 occasionally too coz some petrol station like Petronas dun hav RON 92 petrol..from wat i noticed is there are really no difference for both of the petrol...i can't feel any power lack for RON 92 n more power for RON 97...even the mileage r the same for both..they r just the same...the only different is i save more for RON 92 (when the fuel price at the highest is RM2.75 for RON 97 n RM2.6 for RON 92 - which mean i saved 15 cents for every litre i pump in..n averagely i pump 40 litre per tank...tat is about RM 6 saving per tank) after the car served me about 3 years n 9 months...the performance i stil the same...the most important thing is u must maintain ur car well...change the engine oil follow the schedule...ensure the tyre r not deflate..it never failed me becoz of the engine prob...(but it let me down becoz of the aircon not cold at all) mayb i m heng only lah...i dunno...but i m stil usin the RON 92 for my latio since day one lah...n i m comfortable with the performanc n also the FC too...anyway judge for urself lah...if u feel tat by using RON 97 is better then u mah stick to RON 97 loh..tat's ur money anyway..so no need to argue one lah...btw i dun care wat ppl tellin me about how good is the RON 97 or 98...i know better for the car myself..as long as u happy lah...cheer :) btw i m from Malaysia - Penang.
-
I think there's no issues for your City and Latio to begin with, as their min RON requirement is 91 RON.
My concern is pumping a lower RON that what your owner's manual states.
-
but i dun think we can stil find any brand of petrol that selling the petrol RON which is lower than RON 92 in either M'sia or S'pore liao...i think the lowest is the RON 92 de....mayb in T'land is different case lah where u can stil find the RON 91 petrol...that is y most of our car manual stated the min RON is 91 coz in T'land their lowest petrol RON is 91...n most of our car r 'imported' from T'land one (like the 'T' n 'H' brand) :D

Nice to see your short FR based on different RON. This will further shut the smart alec mouth of different RON contribute to FC and power.

Hi bro Felix (i guess u sb guy right? as my friend carry the same name who is guy :D), Just switch from SPC98 to Esso (5000) and not really see big different (it's just on my 2nd tank), i'm a die hard of SPC98 since i own the car 3 yrs ago (even with >14yrs old car corrolla i've previously)...My trial will eventually prove that i'm waste of $$$$ to go for 98 (though lower grade is equally good)...will try 2 more tanks to decide (last 2 tanks pump abt 50% with Esso 5000 and 50% with Esso F1,98 in Malaysia)
**Me from Penang too...Bukit Mertajam..Permatang Tinggi (to be exact)..Glad to meet fellow friend from Penang here in Latio Club

I'm using Esso 95 too.
I tried Shell VPower once and there was not much of a differrence in power.
95RON is a value-for-money petrol to pump for family sedan like Latio.
Cheaper than 98RON by 8 cents per litre.

bro LatioR...ya i m definitely a 'Guy' ;) very man somemore...kekeke...jk ya..i m glad to see some penang kia here too...kekeke..in fact...i m an ordinary ppl n earning very little income to feed myself only (stil S.A.D = Single, Available, n Desperate leh)..so i hav to find way to reduce the expanses on the car especially the petrol price now is goin up like no body business..thanks to our 'G' loh..so i got no choice but to use my own car as a white mouse to test out which petrol is the best for my ride..i got no scientific method to prove one lah but only base my own feeling n daily usage loh...so i dare not to said tat what i felt is the correct one...just to share some of my experience n hope it would benefit to others :) at the end of the day...it's all depend on u own whether u satisfy or not...cheer :)
p/s: in Malaysia, i think only Caltex offer the same addictive (Techron) for both the Silver (RON92) n also Gold (RON97) petrol..so i think they will do the same to clean ur engine as well. (i m not a Caltex saleman or petrol station owner ah ;) kekeke)

Honestly unless the car is a sport car, I seriously doubt there is much of a difference btwn the different RON...
