Knocking sound when brake or going over hump
« on: December 22, 2009, 10:23:41 PM »
Just got my cars for 2 weeks and past 2 days heard this knocking sound coming from left rear when I brake or go over hump.

It is like a "kok kok" sound, like something is loose and knocking around inside.

Anyone can advise?

I have the same knocking sound over the hump, but not always have it.
I still monitoring, could be the tool inside the spare tyre compartment.
I put the tool kit tie together with the jack together, and notice the black colour thin sheet not properly pasted or too thin.

Does the sound always appear on the same side?

If it is, most likely it is the speaker of the reverse sensor pop out of it's sitting.....got a friend who bought a latio hatch got the same problem....when send back to TCM, they said the speaker pop of it's sitting and danggling inside tat is why always got kok kok sound....but my latio sedan dun have this problem...

My is the reverse module that cause the knocking sound coming from left rear when brake. Go and cable tire it.

Probably due to some misalignment at the rear brake assembly. I had it when i had my brake serviced. Sent it back to TCm to rectify it.

This is a rare problem and many technicians aren't familiar with. I had it for a long time (the sound got louder by the months till I couldn't stand it no more) and just got it fixed at TC. It took me 4-5 service attempts and lots of road testing (light-average-hard braking, shiong on both human ***puke*** and car)  :crycry:. The sound is like tok tok and sometimes like tong tong coming from the rear and can be felt on the floor board.

Let me give you a few tips:

1. Never let the technician or SA think it's stuffs you keep in the boot. Remove all things including the tools from the boot before you go to TC.

2. They will do a brake servicing first (check brakes, remove brake dust) as safety is a critical issue. This solves problem with consistent (regular interval, pattern) braking tok tok noise but not the random sound I was experiencing.

3. If the sound only happens when you brake and not accelerate, it's not the exhaust. TC adjusted/lowered my exhaust without any improvement.

4. It's not the brake shoe. TC put all the blame on the brake shoe and wanted to charge me $90 (wear and tear item) for a brand new brake shoe even I had a lot left (blardy thick). I signed up NCMP as a result, and changed the brake shoe with no improvement.

5. Next, they will tell you the problem could be the drum and want to do some skimming. This certainly helps a bit and depending on the severity of your problem, and this may fix it. As for me, the tok tok noise only became softer and less often after the skimming.

6. Changed the drum to a new pair and the sound is gone!

i.e. Go straight to the point and ask TC to change your rear brake drum.

Hope it helps somebody! Please leave me a PM as I won't be checking this thread often.

Mine confirmed reverse sensor speaker drop off.

Apparently the speaker is stuck on using double sided tape, no wonder fall off lah.

Hi Bro,
I just had my front pad changed at TC (100K servicing),
think rear brake just visual check. Ok, no need to change, cleaned (i hope) then put back.
Now when i brake (not very hard), can hear tick tick sound, not very loud.
But everytime u brake the sound will came out.
Now, no more  warranty, dunno can go back and demand that they check
if there any misfit or lose item during the servicing...dam saniz....

Bro, I'm almost certain it's a misfit, go back and have it checked and demand they fix it free. A good way to test would be to slightly apply pressure to the brakes when they are making that noise. If the noise goes away, it's probably your brake pads not tightly fitted onto the calipers. You can also at a stop light, pump the brakes really hard a few times and the noise should go away for awhile once you start moving again. Lastly, once the car is cooled down, go and push with your finger against the back of the brake pad, if you can push it in at all, that means something is up with your calipers.

i must agree!

When i complain that the reverse sensor is too soft, they apparently pushed the speakers forward. I thought there is a volume control tats y so kaypoh complain the reverse sensor volume.

after tat i can hear the "tok tok" sound when i brake or go down slope. Complain abt the sound and the TC SA said it is the hub that connects all my led wires to. so i went back and wrap the hub up. sound still exist... go back on another day and complain again...

after tat then they say the reverse sensor speaker dropped off!! and it is at this point tat the SA (nt the same as the previous one) told me that the speakers were simply moved!!

As wat pmet said, do not let the SA push the blame back to us, esp when ur ride has been mod.   :devil2:

check with your mechanics if they had done adjustment to your rear drum brakes. The sound might be coming for the self adjustment mechanism that constantly adjust your rear drum brake pad to the optimal position. If they are adjusted properly, there should not be any sound.
Go back and let them re-adjust

Got the car back.
On the way home, listen very carefully for any funny sound
when braking..
Seems like its gone...yahooo

Spoken toTC adviser when collecting car,
ask him what was caused the sound.
Clean up the front braking system,
nothing was wrong with brake.
Well whatever they did, the sound is gone.

Most likely a misfit and they corrected it :)
