'Thud" sound on initial acceleration
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:22:18 PM »
I bought my Latio in Nov 06 but it is a YOM 2005 model. Almost coming to 5 years now, just about to hit 60K

About a year ago, I start having this problem with my Latio. Everytime I start my engine and move off, there is a single "thud" sound when it hits approx 10km/h, then another "thud thud thud thud thud" (5 times) when it hits approx 30km/h. After that no more such sound whenever I stop and move off. Sound appears again after I switch off engine totally and move off again.

The sound is very feint and sounds like construction piling work far away yet you can hear it faintly, initially I thought it was due to some construction work near my house but it happened again and again.

During last servicing in Jul 11, TC mechanic said it is due to ABS when starting up (don't quite exactly understand what it means). Last week sent to another mechanic at TC at first he cannot figure out then afterwards called me (after checking with other mechanics) that it might be due to petrol type used, he suggested I use 98 octane. I intend to try this at my next refuel, try for a few months see if it helps.

Anyone experienced this before?

does the 98 fuel helps? are you using CVT gear box? some article claim that the gear box fully lock at 18kmh, maybe is some clutch issues?

Have not had the chance to top up fuel tank yet, slightly over 1/4 tank to go. I top up tank once every 2 weeks hence I think i can see the effect only in Dec if i were to try 4 tanks.

Yes I drive a CVT gear box

Do you hear the sound if you turn off the air-con ?
do not turn on the air-con b4 u start the car and drive without it for a while to see if sound still comes on.

the sound is still there no matter the air con is on or off.

i think the sound is coming from the gear box. lately only notice this sound.

other than changing the CVT oil, is there anything that can be done on the gear box?

Hi,

My Latio has the exact same syntoms as what you discribe.
I went to Tan Chong and the mechanic also told me is something to do with the ABS system.
So did you managed to solve the problem by changing fuel?

i have changed my cvt oil, but the sound it still there.

maybe it is the ABS self check sound. but mine happen twice at 20kmh and 30kmh

I am into my 2nd tank of Esso 98, sound still knocks at 10 and 30 km/h when engine just starts off. However I think the sound is softer (It might just be my ears playing trick). I don't think higher grade petrol helps remove the sound.

One thing good from this experiment is that I realised my car is so much more powerful! Response is much better, overtaking is so much easier and several times I cruised at 100km/h without realising it. Price differential with Esso 95 is less thatn 4% higher but for my last tank I improved my fuel consuption by more than 10%. So I think for my car using Esso 98 was worth it.

Took me almost 5 years to realise this :(

Have not been back for a while. Sound persist, I gave up on correcting it and take it as part of the car start up. 98 grade fuel does not help at all.

So far I have no complaints with the car, it is just over 5 years old and I felt it drives better with age. I started to be "in one" with the car only around year 4 when I can feel the maximum power of the car. I used to think car pick up is slow, but once you get the hang of your own car, it can really perform beyond its specifications. Many times, I leave other cars in the dust from pick up, and I do not even hit 2.5K rpm.

When I first bought the car, my wife and I said we want to keep this for 10 years. My wife loves driving it as it is quite compact for a lady, unless any major accidents happen, I should be able to keep this for at least 3 more years.

experienced this sound quite regularly

incident just now confirmed my previous observation

lost my grip on wet carpark surface (cement) three times recently, and on this three occasions i heard this same sound just before i lost grip

this sound definitely got something to do with the brake...
